The GENEA Challenge 2026: A Large-Scale Disentangled Evaluation of Speech-Driven Gesture Generation on the Seamless Interaction Dataset

Abstract

This preprint presents the results of the fourth GENEA Challenge, a large-scale human evaluation of five speech-driven gesture-generation systems trained by participating teams on the Seamless Interaction dataset of dyadic conversations. As in the 2023 GENEA Challenge, we used a disentangled evaluation methodology to assess motion quality and speech alignment without confounding between the two, and performed a dyadic mismatching study to isolate the effect of listening and reacting to the interlocutor. We additionally introduce a new semantic gesture-generation task and a text-mismatching evaluation methodology using the Grounded Gestures subset of the data. In total, we ran four large-scale user studies, collecting over 23,000 votes from 869 test-takers. In the motion-realism study, the dataset's filtered segments had substantially higher motion quality than all challenge submissions (68-95% pairwise winrate). In the speech-alignment study, the motion-capture segments provided a conceptual ceiling at 62% alignment score, with the top submission significantly behind at 32% and the rest only slightly above the 0% expected of an input-independent system. In the dyadic study, motion capture again set the ceiling at 65% appropriateness score, but no submission scored substantially above chance, indicating that the systems could not yet respond to the interlocutor. Finally, the semantic mismatching evaluation found highly expressive gestures in the dataset (test-takers identified the matching transcript 79% of the time), yet almost all submissions failed to generate semantically expressive motion, with the best achieving only an 8% appropriateness score. The collected votes and outputs will be made publicly available at https://genea-workshop.github.io/2026/challenge/ to facilitate reproducibility and further research.

SemConFlow: Semantic Grounding of Holistic Co-Speech Gesture Generation with Contrastive Flow-Matching

While the field of co-speech gesture generation has seen significant advances, producing holistic, semantically grounded gestures remains a challenge. Existing approaches rely on external semantic retrieval methods, which limit their generalisation capability due to dependency on predefined linguistic rules. Flow-matching-based methods produce promising results; however, the network is optimised using only semantically congruent samples without exposure to negative examples, leading to learning rhythmic gestures rather than sparse motion, such as iconic and metaphoric gestures. Furthermore, by modelling body parts in isolation, the majority of methods fail to maintain crossmodal consistency. We introduce a Contrastive Flow Matching-based co-speech gesture generation model that uses mismatched audio-text conditions as negatives, training the velocity field to follow the correct motion trajectory while repelling semantically incongruent trajectories. Our model ensures cross-modal coherence by embedding text, audio, and holistic motion into a composite latent space via cosine and contrastive objectives. Extensive experiments and a user study demonstrate that our proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods on two datasets, BEAT2 and SHOW.

SICAGE: Speaker-Independent Culture-Aware Gesture Generation using TED4C-L Dataset

Recent co-speech gesture generation methods often overlook cultural differences, limiting their effectiveness in human-agent interaction. Moreover, culture-conditioned models are rarely evaluated under speaker-disjoint splits, so apparent "cultural" behavior may be confounded with speaker-specific gesturing style. We introduce SICAGE, a modular framework for culture-aware co-speech gesture generation that conditions motion synthesis models on speaker-independent cultural representations. SICAGE learns these representations from audio and text by treating each speaker as a separate domain while imposing invariance across speakers. This encourages representations to remain culture-discriminative while reducing dependence on speaker identity. The resulting cultural embeddings condition a multimodal generator to produce culturally appropriate gestures. We instantiate this idea with two domain generalization approaches: adversarial learning and Fishr regularization. We further introduce ALaDiT, a real-time diffusion-based gesture generator designed to efficiently incorporate the learned cultural embeddings. To validate our method, we built TED4C-L, a 106-hour multimodal dataset of 764 TED speakers from four cultural groups. Experiments show that SICAGE improves motion realism, diversity, beat synchronization, semantic relevance, and cultural consistency.

Semantic Motion Anchors: Bridging Motion and Meaning in Co-Speech Gestures

Learning a shared representation between spoken text and gesture is central to co-speech gesture retrieval, synthesis, and understanding, but remains challenging for semantically meaningful gestures whose communicative intent is not captured by motion alone. Direct contrastive alignment between transcripts and continuous motion embeddings often overemphasizes low-level kinematics and misses the symbolic content of semantic gestures. We propose semantic motion anchors, natural-language abstractions of gesture motion capturing physical form and communicative intent. Our method discretizes 3D gestures into body-hand motion primitives, verbalizes them into structured descriptions, and grounds them in the transcript to provide auxiliary contrastive supervision. On BEAT2, our method improves text-to-gesture R@1 by 8.2% over a direct text-motion baseline and outperforms prior retrieval approaches on text to gesture and gesture to text retrieval directions. Beyond aggregate retrieval metrics, semantic motion anchor supervision helps retrieve gestures that are semantically meaningful for the spoken query, rather than defaulting to generic motion patterns. A downstream retrieval-augmented gesture generation study showed that users significantly preferred gestures retrieved by our approach over a retrieval-augmented generation baseline, demonstrating that semantically grounded retrieval translates to gestures that better convey communicative intent in downstream generation.
