FAM-DQ: A Dual-Quadrotor-Based Fully Actuated Aerial Manipulator for High-Torque Interaction

Authors: Xuwei YangRuoyu RenZiqian Guo

Abstract

Aerial physical interaction requires aerial manipulation platforms to generate large interaction forces and torques while maintaining precise end-effector control. However, conventional underactuated aerial manipulators suffer from strong position-attitude coupling, whereas fully actuated platform designs often face structural complexity, limited payload capacity, and insufficient torque output. This paper presents FAM-DQ, a dual-quadrotor based fully actuated aerial manipulator designed for high-torque physical interaction tasks. By mounting two quadrotor propulsion modules at the ends of a central frame through passive joints, while using a gear-driven servo to regulate the pointing direction, FAM-DQ achieves decoupled 66-DoF end-effector control with omnidirectional manipulation capability and enhanced torque output. Experiments including trajectory tracking, attitude tracking, static torque measurement, and screw driving validate the proposed design. FAM-DQ achieves a maximum torque of 1.019 Nm1.019~\mathrm{N}\cdot\mathrm{m} with a total mass of 0.447 kg0.447~\mathrm{kg}, corresponding to a torque-to-mass ratio of 2.28 Nm/kg2.28~\mathrm{N}\cdot\mathrm{m/kg}.

DuctAM: A Duct-Assisted Quadrotor-Based Aerial Manipulator Enabling High-Force Push-and-Pull Interactions

Uncrewed Aerial Manipulators (UAMs) extend the capabilities of Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from perception to physical interaction. Among various aerial interactions, push-and-pull operations are fundamental manipulation primitives that require sustained horizontal forces while maintaining stable flight. In this paper, we propose DuctAM, a compact aerial manipulation platform that enhances horizontal force capability for push-and-pull interactions using two ducted fans integrated along the quadrotor interaction axis. An attitude-force decoupled control scheme enables controllable horizontal forces without requiring large attitude changes. Extensive real-world experiments are conducted to validate the DuctAM. Figure-eight trajectory tracking experiments demonstrate stable flight and accurate motion control in both quad and duct modes. Force-measurement experiments quantify the decoupled longitudinal force capability of DuctAM. Finally, representative push-and-pull interaction tasks, including cart pushing, door closing, and drawer opening, verify the practical effectiveness of DuctAM. The results show that DuctAM achieves significantly improved horizontal interaction force capability while maintaining stable flight compared with conventional UAVs.

FLOAT Drone for Physical Interaction: Lateral Airflow Reduction, Wrench Modeling, and Adaptive Control

Aerial physical interaction represents a promising direction for next-generation unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), but it requires an aerial platform that can exert contact forces while maintaining stable flight. For close-proximity tasks, this translates into three coupled design requirements: multidimensional wrench generation for stable contact, compactness for maneuverability and safety in confined spaces, and reduced lateral airflow toward the target when generating horizontal force. This article presents FLOAT Drone, a fully actuated coaxial UAV with servo-driven control surfaces for close-proximity physical interaction. The coaxial dual-rotor layout provides a compact propulsion layout, while the control surfaces, immersed in the rotor downwash, generate lateral forces and moments for 6-DoF wrench generation. A force-matched computational fluid dynamics (CFD) comparison with a tilted-rotor alternative quantifies the reduction in target-facing lateral airflow. To account for nonlinear rotor--control-surface coupling in the rotor wake, a high-fidelity polynomial aerodynamic wrench model is identified from precision force measurements and embedded in a constrained nonlinear allocator for real-time wrench tracking. Comparative flight and interaction experiments show that the proposed framework improves control accuracy over linear allocation baselines, rejects ground-effect and payload disturbances, and enables close-proximity drawer push--pull manipulation through a 2 cm2~\mathrm{cm} handle clearance.

FLOAT Drone: A Fully-actuated Coaxial Aerial Robot for Close-Proximity Operations

How to endow aerial robots with the ability to operate in close proximity remains an open problem. The core challenges lie in the propulsion system's dual-task requirement: generating manipulation forces while simultaneously counteracting gravity. These competing demands create dynamic coupling effects during physical interactions. Furthermore, rotor-induced airflow disturbances critically undermine operational reliability. Although fully-actuated unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) alleviate dynamic coupling effects via six-degree-of-freedom (6-DoF) force-torque decoupling, existing implementations fail to address the aerodynamic interference between drones and environments. They also suffer from oversized designs, which compromise maneuverability and limit their applications in various operational scenarios. To address these limitations, we present FLOAT Drone (FuLly-actuated cOaxial Aerial roboT), a novel fully-actuated UAV featuring two key structural innovations. By integrating control surfaces into fully-actuated systems for the first time, we significantly suppress lateral airflow disturbances during operations. Furthermore, a coaxial dual-rotor configuration enables a compact size while maintaining high hovering efficiency. Through dynamic modeling, we have developed hierarchical position and attitude controllers that support both fully-actuated and underactuated modes. Experimental validation through comprehensive real-world experiments confirms the system's functional capabilities in close-proximity operations.
