Abstract

Accurate boundary delineation remains a persistent challenge in dermoscopic image segmentation because of blurred lesion margins, heterogeneous textures, and complex background artifacts. From a signal-processing perspective, lesion boundaries represent high-frequency components that are highly susceptible to aliasing, noise amplification, and information loss. Consequently, repeated downsampling and feature transformations in conventional convolutional architectures often lead to severely degraded boundary representations. To address these limitations, we propose EA-LiteUNet, an edge-adaptive and computationally efficient U-Net variant specifically designed for boundary-sensitive medical image segmentation. The architecture integrates three core mechanisms: (1) boundary-aware representation learning to suppress aliasing and preserve high-frequency structural details; (2) attention-guided feature modulation to selectively enhance boundary-relevant responses across multi-scale features; and (3) a resource-adaptive inference strategy to dynamically balance segmentation accuracy and computational efficiency. Extensive evaluations across three public dermoscopic datasets demonstrate that EA-LiteUNet consistently achieves superior boundary precision. Specifically, on the ISIC 2018 dataset, the method significantly reduces the 95% Hausdorff Distance (HD95) to 12.89 pixels while maintaining a robust Dice score of 92.08%. Notably, this strong performance is achieved with an ultralightweight configuration of merely 0.29M parameters and 1.17 GFLOPs. Ablation studies further validate the complementary effects of these components, confirming their contribution to enhanced boundary fidelity and stable optimization.

MambaLiteUNet: Cross-Gated Adaptive Feature Fusion for Robust Skin Lesion Segmentation

Recent segmentation models have demonstrated promising efficiency by aggressively reducing parameter counts and computational complexity. However, these models often struggle to accurately delineate fine lesion boundaries and texture patterns essential for early skin cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. In this paper, we propose MambaLiteUNet, a compact yet robust segmentation framework that integrates Mamba state space modeling into a U-Net architecture, along with three key modules: Adaptive Multi-Branch Mamba Feature Fusion (AMF), Local-Global Feature Mixing (LGFM), and Cross-Gated Attention (CGA). These modules are designed to enhance local-global feature interaction, preserve spatial details, and improve the quality of skip connections. MambaLiteUNet achieves an average IoU of 87.12% and average Dice score of 93.09% across ISIC2017, ISIC2018, HAM10000, and PH2 benchmarks, outperforming state-of-the-art models. Compared to U-Net, our model improves average IoU and Dice by 7.72 and 4.61 points, respectively, while reducing parameters by 93.6% and GFLOPs by 97.6%. Additionally, in domain generalization with six unseen lesion categories, MambaLiteUNet achieves 77.61% IoU and 87.23% Dice, performing best among all evaluated models. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that MambaLiteUNet achieves a strong balance between accuracy and efficiency, making it a competitive and practical solution for dermatological image segmentation. PBE-UNet: A light weight Progressive Boundary-Enhanced U-Net with Scale-Aware Aggregation for Ultrasound Image Segmentation

Accurate lesion segmentation in ultrasound images is essential for preventive screening and clinical diagnosis, yet remains challenging due to low contrast, blurry boundaries, and significant scale variations. Although existing deep learning-based methods have achieved remarkable performance, these methods still struggle with scale variations and indistinct tumor boundaries. To address these challenges, we propose a progressive boundary enhanced U-Net (PBE-UNet). Specially, we first introduce a scale-aware aggregation module (SAAM) that dynamically adjusts its receptive field to capture robust multi-scale contextual information. Then, we propose a boundary-guided feature enhancement (BGFE) module to enhance the feature representations. We find that there are large gaps between the narrow boundary and the wide segmentation error areas. Unlike existing methods that treat boundaries as static masks, the BGFE module progressively expands the narrow boundary prediction into broader spatial attention maps. Thus, broader spatial attention maps could effectively cover the wider segmentation error regions and enhance the model's focus on these challenging areas. We conduct expensive experiments on four benchmark ultrasound datasets, BUSI, Dataset B, TN3K, and BP. The experimental results how that our proposed PBE-UNet outperforms state-of-the-art ultrasound image segmentation methods. The code is at https://github.com/cruelMouth/PBE-UNet.

Explainable Continuous-Time Mask Refinement with Local Self-Similarity Priors for Medical Image Segmentation

Accurate semantic segmentation of foot ulcers is essential for automated wound monitoring, yet boundary delineation remains challenging due to tissue heterogeneity and poor contrast with surrounding skin. To overcome the limitations of standard intensity-based networks, we present LSS-LTCNet:an ante-hoc explainable framework synergizing deterministic structural priors with continuous-time neural dynamics. Our architecture departs from traditional black-box models by employing a Local Self-Similarity (LSS) mechanism that extracts dense, illumination-invariant texture descriptors to explicitly disentangle necrotic tissue from background artifacts. To enforce topological precision, we introduce a Liquid Time-Constant (LTC) refinement module that treats boundary evolution as an ODEgoverned dynamic system, iteratively refining masks over continuous time-steps. Comprehensive evaluation on the MICCAI FUSeg dataset demonstrates that LSS-LTCNet achieves state-of-the-art boundary alignment, securing a peak Dice score of 86.96% and an exceptional 95th percentile Hausdorff Distance (HD95) of 8.91 pixels. Requiring merely 25.70M parameters, the model significantly outperforms heavier U-Net and transformer baselines in efficiency. By providing inherent visual audit trails alongside high-fidelity predictions, LSS-LTCNet offers a robust and transparent solution for computer-aided diagnosis in mobile healthcare (mHealth) settings.
