Abstract

Blueberry ripeness is judged by berry colour, cluster composition, and the distribution of maturity stages within a plant, however, public green house image resources with dense ripeness-stage masks remain limited. We present AerialYield-B2D, where B2D denotes BlueBerry Dataset, acurated real-image resource containing 514 RGB images and 30,195 annotated blueberry instances across five ripeness stages: green immature, pale pink, pink-turns-purple, fully ripe and over-ripe. The release provides class-specific binary masks, overall berry masks, semantic label maps, image-level count tables, SHA-256 hashes, source metadata, recommended train/validation/test splits and technical validations. AerialYield is the broader project name; this release does not provide harvest weight, fruit mass or per-area yield measurements, and the count labels should therefore be interpreted as image-level berry counts rather than yield estimates. The images include 424 smartphone greenhouse images, 67 video-derived frames, and 23 DJI Fly video-frame samples, providing a reproducible dataset for ripeness segmentation, berry counting, and class-imbalance analysis in controlled-environment blueberry production.

ViViD-5K: Vineyard vision dataset for field-based berry detection and segmentation and grape cluster closure estimation

Cluster closure, defined as the progressive filling of gaps between the berries in a grape bunch, is a key trait in vineyard management, impacting disease risk. However, traditional visual scoring methods are labor-intensive, subjective, and lack temporal resolution. Existing datasets rarely support fine-grained berry-level analysis, limiting the development of robust deep learning models. In this work, we present ViViD-5k, a large-scale in-field Vineyard Vision Dataset containing 5,000 images with dense annotations, including over 648,000 berry centroids and cluster segmentation masks spanning 13 grape varieties. Building on this dataset, we introduce GrapeSAM, a two-stage visual pipeline that combines point-based berry localization with prompt-based segmentation using Segment Anything, followed by transformer-based cluster segmentation. The pipeline enables automated, in-field estimation of cluster closure with minimal supervision. Quantitative results demonstrate strong segmentation and counting accuracy across diverse conditions, while visualizations confirm robustness on both in-domain and out-of-domain samples. This work provides a scalable and objective alternative to manual compactness scoring and supports high-throughput grape phenotyping with enhanced spatial detail.

A Novel Public Dataset for Strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) Ripeness Detection and Comparative Evaluation of YOLO-Based Models

The strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa), known worldwide for its economic value and nutritional richness, is a widely cultivated fruit. Determining the correct ripeness level during the harvest period is crucial for both preventing losses for producers and ensuring consumers receive a quality product. However, traditional methods, i.e., visual assessments alone, can be subjective and have a high margin of error. Therefore, computer-assisted systems are needed. However, the scarcity of comprehensive datasets accessible to everyone in the literature makes it difficult to compare studies in this field. In this study, a new and publicly available strawberry ripeness dataset, consisting of 566 images and 1,201 labeled objects, prepared under variable light and environmental conditions in two different greenhouses in Turkey, is presented to the literature. Comparative tests conducted on the data set using YOLOv8, YOLOv9, and YOLO11-based models showed that the highest precision value was 90.94% in the YOLOv9c model, while the highest recall value was 83.74% in the YOLO11s model. In terms of the general performance criterion mAP@50, YOLOv8s was the best performing model with a success rate of 86.09%. The results show that small and medium-sized models work more balanced and efficiently on this type of dataset, while also establishing a fundamental reference point for smart agriculture applications.

Still image and spatial-temporal tomato data enabling detection, segmentation, tracking, and video-instance segmentation using strong and weak labels

In this manuscript we release two datasets for visual sensing of tomato plants grown in commercial-like settings and acquired using a robot. The first is BUTom21 which consists of still images and manual annotations. The second is BUTom-ST21 which consists of video-based data and semi-automated annotations through AI-based methods, referred to as pseudo-labels. In both cases, we provide pixel-level labels for the ripeness of the fruit. The aim is to provide the research community a challenging set of real-world imagery to explore methods to sense and estimate the state of tomato plants and their fruit, which is an important horticultural crop. Importantly, the spatial-temporal dataset provides individual fruit count and ripeness information enabling researchers to push the boundaries of field-based phenotyping.
