Abstract

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have achieved remarkable progress in vision-language interaction, yet their safety alignment remains vulnerable to jailbreak attacks. A key challenge is that safety behavior learned in the textual space does not reliably transfer to fused cross-modal representations, leaving multimodal inputs exploitable through latent semantic cues. We propose Text-Anchored Semantic Perturbation Attack (TA-SPA), a black-box jailbreak framework that optimizes transferable perturbations in a text-anchored semantic space. TA-SPA integrates Text-Anchored Semantic Factorization (TASF), which encourages the separation of cross-modal semantic factors from modality-specific residuals, with Semantic-Preserving Augmentation (SPA), which diversifies harmful target anchors while preserving semantic consistency. Experiments show strong attack effectiveness and transfer to commercial MLLMs, with competitive performance under representative defenses. Additional controls and probing support the intended factorization without implying perfect disentanglement, motivating representation-level safety alignment beyond input-level filtering.

MIDAS: Multi-Image Dispersion and Semantic Reconstruction for Jailbreaking MLLMs

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have achieved remarkable performance but remain vulnerable to jailbreak attacks that can induce harmful content and undermine their secure deployment. Previous studies have shown that introducing additional inference steps, which disrupt security attention, can make MLLMs more susceptible to being misled into generating malicious content. However, these methods rely on single-image masking or isolated visual cues, which only modestly extend reasoning paths and thus achieve limited effectiveness, particularly against strongly aligned commercial closed-source models. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose Multi-Image Dispersion and Semantic Reconstruction (MIDAS), a multimodal jailbreak framework that decomposes harmful semantics into risk-bearing subunits, disperses them across multiple visual clues, and leverages cross-image reasoning to gradually reconstruct the malicious intent, thereby bypassing existing safety mechanisms. The proposed MIDAS enforces longer and more structured multi-image chained reasoning, substantially increases the model's reliance on visual cues while delaying the exposure of malicious semantics and significantly reducing the model's security attention, thereby improving the performance of jailbreak against advanced MLLMs. Extensive experiments across different datasets and MLLMs demonstrate that the proposed MIDAS outperforms state-of-the-art jailbreak attacks for MLLMs and achieves an average attack success rate of 81.46% across 4 closed-source MLLMs. Our code is available at this link.

DMN: A Compositional Framework for Jailbreaking Multimodal LLMs with Multi-Image Inputs

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) are vulnerable to jailbreak attacks, which can elicit harmful responses from MLLMs. Many MLLMs support multi-image inputs, inadvertently introducing new vulnerabilities due to less efforts on multi-image safety alignment. Previous MLLM jailbreak methods only uses a single image, which restricts the attack space: they cannot distribute harmful requests across multiple images, carry abundant information, or exploit additional visual reasoning tasks to distract MLLMs. To address these limitations, in this paper, we propose a compositional jailbreak framework, DMN, which leverages Distributed instruction, Multimodal evidence and a Number chain task to fully enhance the jailbreak performance. Extensive experiments show that DMN is highly effective for MLLM jailbreaking, e.g. achieving attack success rates of over 90% on GPT-4o, Gemini-2.5-pro and Claude Sonnet 4, surpassing other baselines by a large margin. This compositional, multi-image jailbreak strategy reveals fundamental weaknesses in their safety mechanisms.

Divide and Conquer: A Hybrid Strategy Defeats Multimodal Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) are widely applied in various fields of society due to their powerful reasoning, understanding, and generation capabilities. However, the security issues associated with these models are becoming increasingly severe. Jailbreaking attacks, as an important method for detecting vulnerabilities in LLMs, have been explored by researchers who attempt to induce these models to generate harmful content through various attack methods. Nevertheless, existing jailbreaking methods face numerous limitations, such as excessive query counts, limited coverage of jailbreak modalities, low attack success rates, and simplistic evaluation methods. To overcome these constraints, this paper proposes a multimodal jailbreaking method: JMLLM. This method integrates multiple strategies to perform comprehensive jailbreak attacks across text, visual, and auditory modalities. Additionally, we contribute a new and comprehensive dataset for multimodal jailbreaking research: TriJail, which includes jailbreak prompts for all three modalities. Experiments on the TriJail dataset and the benchmark dataset AdvBench, conducted on 13 popular LLMs, demonstrate advanced attack success rates and significant reduction in time overhead.
