Abstract

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) achieves state-of-the-art rendering quality at real-time speeds but suffers from "model bloat" - a large number of redundant, low-opacity Gaussians that inflate memory usage and training costs. This inefficiency stems from the standard "densify-then-prune" paradigm, which expands the model aggressively before relying on pruning to achieve compactness. To mitigate this problem, we present an efficient training framework that builds an intrinsically compact representation, replacing the conventional densify-then-prune cycle. Our method leverages a synergistic design: an L2 reconstruction loss to provide error-proportional gradients that stabilize optimization, and a novel Polarized Opacity Prior (POP) to actively manage the Gaussian population. POP steers informative primitives toward full opacity and uninformative ones toward transparency, enabling natural pruning and accelerating rendering through Early Ray Termination. Experiments on three public datasets demonstrate that our approach consistently achieves accelerated 3DGS training with significantly fewer Gaussians while maintaining comparable visual reconstruction quality. These results show that the proposed framework provides a simple and effective path toward fast and inherently compact 3DGS training.

MMGS: 10×\times Compressed 3DGS through Optimal Transport Aggregation based on Multi-view Ranking

While 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has revolutionized 3D reconstruction, it suffers from significant overhead due to massive redundant primitives. Existing compression methods typically rely on local sampling or fixed pruning thresholds, which often struggle to balance redundancy reduction with high-fidelity rendering. To address this, we propose a novel framework that formulates Gaussian optimization as a global geometric distribution matching problem. Specifically, our approach integrates three components: (1) we introduce a multi-view 3D Gaussian contribution ranking mechanism that filters primitives using geometric consistency instead of local heuristics; (2) we propose a global Optimal Transport (OT)-based aggregation algorithm that merges redundant primitives while preserving the underlying geometry; and (3) we design an OT-based densification operator that maintains the Gaussian's distributional properties for stable optimization. Our approach achieves state-of-the-art rendering quality with only \textbf{10%\%} primitives and \textbf{10×\times} accelerated training speeds compared to vanilla 3DGS.

Proxy-GS: Unified Occlusion Priors for Training and Inference in Structured 3D Gaussian Splatting

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has emerged as an efficient approach for achieving photorealistic rendering. Recent MLP-based variants further improve visual fidelity but introduce substantial decoding overhead during rendering. To alleviate computation cost, several pruning strategies and level-of-detail (LOD) techniques have been introduced, aiming to effectively reduce the number of Gaussian primitives in large-scale scenes. However, our analysis reveals that significant redundancy still remains due to the lack of occlusion awareness. In this work, we propose Proxy-GS, a novel pipeline that exploits a proxy to introduce Gaussian occlusion awareness from any view. At the core of our approach is a fast proxy system capable of producing precise occlusion depth maps at a resolution of 1000x1000 under 1ms. This proxy serves two roles: first, it guides the culling of anchors and Gaussians to accelerate rendering speed. Second, it guides the densification towards surfaces during training, avoiding inconsistencies in occluded regions, and improving the rendering quality. In heavily occluded scenarios, such as the MatrixCity Streets dataset, Proxy-GS not only equips MLP-based Gaussian splatting with stronger rendering capability but also achieves faster rendering speed. Specifically, it achieves more than 2.5x speedup over Octree-GS, and consistently delivers substantially higher rendering quality. Code will be public upon acceptance.

REFINE: Super-efficient 3D Gaussian Splatting Pruning via Rendering-Free Primitive Importance

Existing pruning methods for 3D Gaussian splatting (3DGS) suffer from either severe quality degradation or prohibitive computational overhead. In this paper, we propose REFINE, a highly accelerated 3DGS pruning framework centered on a novel rendering-free primitive importance metric. Our approach leverages an analytically approximated, rendering-aware Hessian field to quantify the expected perceptual error induced by the removal of individual primitives. By modeling the joint modulation of visibility, projection geometry and the content adaptive hyperparameter, we entirely bypass costly forward rendering passes and derive an anisotropic perceptual weight field that serves as a high-fidelity proxy for primitive importance. Extensive experiments across multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate that REFINE maintains highly competitive rendering quality while achieving a 3,000×3,000\times reduction in pruning-related computational complexity, translating to a practical ∼20×\sim 20\times speedup in device latency compared to state-of-the-art pruning methods.
