Abstract

In this paper, we propose DualSpecSE, a speech enhancement framework that jointly models Mel-spectrogram and complex spectrogram in a dual-path architecture for improved ASR performance and higher-quality speech reconstruction. The Mel branch learns coarse-grained acoustic representations and produces enhanced Mel-spectrograms for direct ASR usage, while the complex branch refines fine-grained spectral details for high-fidelity waveform reconstruction. Built upon the cross-band and narrow-band blocks from CleanMel, DualSpecSE introduces an interaction module and a fusion module to enable effective information exchange between the two branches. The model simultaneously outputs enhanced Mel and complex spectrogram without requiring a pretrained vocoder. Experimental results demonstrate consistent improvements in speech fidelity, perceptual quality, and ASR performance. Codes and audio samples are available.

UniSE: A Unified Framework for Decoder-Only Autoregressive LM-Based Speech Enhancement

Neural audio codecs have largely promoted the application of language models (LMs) for speech applications. However, the effectiveness of autoregressive LM-based models in unifying speech enhancement (SE) tasks remains underexplored. In this work, we propose UniSE, a unified decoder-only LM-based framework to handle different SE tasks including speech restoration, target speaker extraction, and speech separation. Conditioned on input speech features, it autoregressively generates target discrete tokens, facilitating compatibility between distinct learning patterns of multiple tasks. To further optimize speech quality, we introduce a progressive reinforcement learning strategy with multiple assessment criteria. Experiments on several benchmarks show that UniSE achieves competitive performance compared to discriminative and generative baselines, demonstrating the capacity of LMs in unifying SE tasks. SE-MSB: End-to-End Unpaired Speech Enhancement using Mamba Schrödinger Bridges

Speech enhancement (SE) models typically rely on supervised learning with paired data examples where clean speech is synthetically degraded. This paradigm limits performance in real-world scenarios where the target environment's specific acoustic characteristics are unknown. We propose a fully unpaired SE framework that uses principled Diffusion Schrödinger Bridges (DSB) to learn a stochastic transport process between a clean and a degraded speech distribution. Algorithms for learning transport maps are computationally heavy since they require simulating differential equations during training, usually at each training step. Therefore, we propose using a high-efficiency Mamba Diffusion Model designed for end-to-end waveform processing. We compare against state-of-the-art methods for speech enhancement, both paired and unpaired, as well as a classical signal processing algorithm. Experimental results show that we are on par or better than the baselines while being orders of magnitude faster during inference. Furthermore, we show that the flexibility of the DSB formulation allows our model to generalize across SE tasks, offering a robust and efficient solution for real-world speech restoration.

Absorbing Discrete Diffusion for Speech Enhancement

Inspired by recent developments in neural speech coding and diffusion-based language modeling, we tackle speech enhancement by modeling the conditional distribution of clean speech codes given noisy speech codes using absorbing discrete diffusion. The proposed approach, which we call ADDSE, leverages both the expressive latent space of neural audio codecs and the non-autoregressive sampling procedure of diffusion models. To efficiently model the hierarchical structure of residual vector quantization codes, we propose RQDiT, which combines techniques from RQ-Transformer and diffusion Transformers for non-autoregressive modeling. Results show competitive performance in terms of non-intrusive objective metrics on two datasets, especially at low signal-to-noise ratios and with few sampling steps. Code and audio examples are available online.
