Enemray: Toward Capable Language Models for Hassaniya

Abstract

We introduce Enemray, a Hassaniya-centric language model that enables general-purpose interaction in Hassaniya. Enemray is trained around a stability--plasticity objective: acquire strong Hassaniya linguistic and cultural competence while preserving the general reasoning, multilingual, instruction-following, and safety behaviors of a capable instruction-tuned model. The development pipeline separates language acquisition from behavioral specialization. A separately assembled continual-pretraining corpus provides broad exposure to natural Hassaniya and Mauritanian text; layer-selective continual pretraining learns a compact language-specific parameter update; that update is transferred into the instruction-tuned parameter space; and supervised post-training develops conversational, cultural, literary, task-oriented, and cross-lingual behavior. The supervised corpus integrates selected public Hassaniya and Mauritanian resources with a substantially larger body of newly collected, reconstructed, curated, and constructed instruction data, while policy-generated replay provides a retention signal from the reference model's own behavior distribution. The resulting collection is substantially larger and broader in purpose than existing Hassaniya text resources. In evaluation, Enemray achieves the strongest English to Hassaniya translation among the compared open and proprietary models and the highest overall score on Mauritanian translation error detection, while retaining most of the general capabilities of its instruction-tuned base model on mathematical reasoning, knowledge, code generation, and function calling. This report describes the motivation, data construction, model design, training methodology, and evaluation of Enemray.

MameLoshnLM: Yiddish Language Model and Evaluation Benchmark

We present MameLoshnLM, the first open-source 8B-parameter language model built specifically for Yiddish. Despite Yiddish's rich textual tradition, its limited digital presence and the scarcity of reliable evaluation resources have constrained progress in Yiddish language modeling. Existing multilingual corpora and benchmarks are often poor proxies for the language, containing substantial amounts of noisy, machine-translated, and misclassified text. We address these gaps by introducing Oytser, a high-quality Yiddish pretraining corpus that combines contemporary web-native sources with literary materials, and Kashes, a multi-task benchmark spanning translation, linguistic analysis, information extraction, and language understanding. Using these resources, we continue pretraining Llama 3.1 8B to obtain MameLoshnLM. Across the tasks in the benchmark, MameLoshnLM outperforms open baselines of similar scale. Our analyses show that these gains are not only quantitative: relative to general-purpose multilingual models, MameLoshnLM better captures language-defining lexical and morphological patterns, pointing to a broader failure mode of noisy web-scale multilingual data for low-resource languages. Our results provide both a foundation for Yiddish NLP and a practical template for language model development in historically rich but digitally underrepresented languages.

SomaliBench Eval: Measuring English-to-Somali Refusal Gaps in Open-Weight Language Models

Large language model safety evaluation remains heavily English-centered, leaving low-resource languages under-measured even when models are deployed globally. We evaluate four open-weight instruction-tuned models on SomaliBench v0, a native-author-verified benchmark of 100 harmful-intent prompts paired across English and Somali. Each of Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct, Gemma-2-9B-Instruct, Qwen-2.5-7B-Instruct, and Aya-23-8B is run locally with temperature 0 and the same English "helpful, harmless, and honest" (HHH) system prompt. A pinned Claude Sonnet snapshot (claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929) classifies each response as refused, complied, or unclear; the native author spot-checks a stratified 80-row sample. We find large English-to-Somali refusal gaps for all four models: Llama-3.1-8B (0.90; 95% bootstrap CI [0.85, 0.96]), Aya-23-8B (0.75 [0.67, 0.83]), Qwen-2.5-7B (0.69 [0.59, 0.78]), and Gemma-2-9B (0.38 [0.27, 0.49]). For three models, the dominant Somali non-refusal mode is not fluent harmful compliance but unclear output: empty, wrong-language, or incoherent generations. The native verification spot-check achieves 100% agreement with the judge (Cohen's kappa = 1.00) on the 80 sampled rows. We report aggregate refusal rates, category gaps, and reliability statistics only; raw model generations are retained locally and are not released.

HEBATRON: A Hebrew-Specialized Open-Weight Mixture-of-Experts Language Model

We present Hebatron, a Hebrew-specialized open-weight large language model built on the NVIDIA Nemotron-3 sparse Mixture-of-Experts architecture. Training employs a three-phase easy-to-hard curriculum with continuous anti-forgetting anchoring, followed by supervised fine-tuning on 2 million bilingual Hebrew--English samples. The curriculum ordering alone yields a 3-point aggregate benchmark gain over the reversed configuration. Hebatron achieves a Hebrew reasoning average of 73.8%, outperforming DictaLM-3.0-24B-Thinking (68.9%) and remaining competitive with Gemma-3-27B-IT on GSM8K-HE and Israeli Trivia, while activating only 3B parameters per forward pass across a 30B-parameter model, delivering approximately 9 times higher inference throughput at native context lengths up to 65,536 tokens. To our knowledge, this is the first language-specific adaptation of the Nemotron-3 architecture for any target language, and the first open-weight Hebrew-specialized MoE model with native long-context support. Model weights are released openly to support further research in Hebrew and Semitic-language NLP.
