Abstract

Real-world visualization requests are routinely ambiguous, incomplete, or factually incorrect, yet existing Text-to-Visualization (Text-to-Vis) systems assume well-specified inputs and produce charts in a single pass. When queries are imperfect, a system must \emph{interact} with the user to recover the true intent, but no benchmark or method supports this dynamic process. We introduce \textbf{VisInteract}, a new paradigm that reframes Text-to-Vis as interaction-driven intent recovery, and \textbf{VisInteract-Bench}, to our knowledge, that is the first benchmark for dynamic interactive Text-to-Vis, featuring controlled imperfection injection, a leakage-controlled User Agent for realistic multi-turn feedback, and dual-perspective (code and chart) automated evaluation. On the algorithmic side, we propose \textbf{Vis-MCTS}, a Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) enhanced method, introducing improvements over classical MCTS, that \emph{Progressive Widening} to tame the unbounded tool-argument space in tree search, \emph{cross-rollout information sharing} so clarifications and critiques benefit the entire search tree, and \emph{Dimension-Aware Reward Decomposition} that routes scalar user feedback along data-fidelity, visual-design, and intent-alignment dimensions to resolve credit assignment across heterogeneous actions. Extensive Experiments across two LLM backbones show that Vis-MCTS consistently outperforms all Text-to-Vis baselines, improving end-to-end task success by 13.40%13.40\%--16.27%16.27\% over the strongest interactive baseline and by more than 5×5\times over non-interactive ones.

Beyond Pixels: Introspective and Interactive Grounding for Visualization Agents

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) frequently misread values, hallucinate details, and confuse overlapping elements in charts. Current approaches rely solely on pixel interpretation, creating a Pixel-Only Bottleneck: agents treat interactive charts as static images, losing access to the structured specification that encodes exact values. We introduce Introspective and Interactive Visual Grounding (IVG), a framework that combines (1) spec-grounded introspection, which queries the underlying specification for deterministic evidence, with (2) view-grounded interaction, which manipulates the view to resolve visual ambiguity. To enable evaluation without VLM bias, we present iPlotBench, a benchmark of 500 interactive Plotly figures with 6,706 binary questions and ground-truth specifications. Experiments show that introspection improves data reconstruction fidelity, while the combination with interaction achieves the highest QA accuracy (0.81), with +6.7 % gains on overlapping geometries. We further demonstrate IVG in deployed agents that explore data autonomously and collaborate with human users in real time.

Vis-CoT: A Human-in-the-Loop Framework for Interactive Visualization and Intervention in LLM Chain-of-Thought Reasoning

Large language models (LLMs) show strong reasoning via chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting, but the process is opaque, which makes verification, debugging, and control difficult in high-stakes settings. We present Vis-CoT, a human-in-the-loop framework that converts linear CoT text into an interactive reasoning graph. Users can visualize the logical flow, identify flawed steps, and intervene by pruning incorrect paths and grafting new, user-defined premises. This shifts interaction from passive observation to active collaboration, steering models toward more accurate and trustworthy conclusions. Across GSM8K and StrategyQA, Vis-CoT improves final-answer accuracy by up to 24 percentage points over non-interactive baselines. A user study also shows large gains in perceived usability and trust. Vis-CoT points to a practical path for more reliable, understandable, and collaborative reasoning by combining LLMs with targeted human oversight.

TVI-CoT: Text-Visual Interleaved Chain-of-Thought Reasoning for Multimodal Understanding

Chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning has proven effective for enhancing problem-solving in large language models. However, when applied to multimodal LLMs (MLLMs), existing CoT approaches suffer from a fundamental limitation: they perform reasoning entirely in text without accessing visual features during the reasoning process. After initial visual encoding, image information becomes inaccessible, forcing models to reason based solely on whatever was captured in the initial description, which forms a `vision-blind reasoning' paradigm that limits fine-grained visual extraction, error verification, and adaptive attention. We propose Text-Visual Interleaved Chain-of-Thought (TVI-CoT), a framework that enables explicit interleaving of textual reasoning and visual feature access through learnable control tokens <THINK>, <LOOK> and <ANSWER>. These tokens allow dynamic switching between reasoning and visual grounding, attending to relevant image regions conditioned on the evolving reasoning state. Experiments on eight benchmarks demonstrate state-of-the-art results among MLLM-based CoT methods and notable performance boost compared to the baseline: +6.1% on MMMU, +3.8% on MathVerse, +3.4% on MathVista, and +3.4% on ScienceQA.
