Abstract

Robotic garment unfolding is essential for downstream tasks, yet quasi-static methods require repeated actions, while existing dynamic approaches predominantly rely on bimanual flinging. We present RotateIt!, a single-arm framework that uses adaptive axial rotation for dynamic garment unfolding. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first unfolding framework to employ dynamic axial rotation as its primary manipulation primitive. From a randomly initialized tabletop configuration, the robot selects a rotation-effective grasp and rotates the lifted garment about an approximately fixed anchor, generating inertial tension that separates overlapping layers within a compact workspace. A grasp ranker selects the anchor, while an online residual policy adapts the rotation extent and speed, thereby determining the release timing. Across seen and unseen simulated garments and eight unseen real garments, RotateIt! improves success within three attempts by 44.0-61.0 percentage points over quasi-static pick-and-place. The simulation-trained policies transfer zero-shot to the real world, achieving 75.6% success, 41% higher first-attempt coverage, and 26% higher final coverage. The resulting states further enable autonomous robotic folding without manual rearrangement.

FoldNet++: a Large-Scale Synthetic Dataset for Robotic T-Shirt Folding and Unfolding

Due to the highly deformable nature of garments, training a generalizable policy for robotic T-shirt folding and unfolding remains a significant challenge. In this work, we present a large-scale synthetic dataset for robotic T-shirt folding and unfolding, covering 6 robotic embodiments, 1K T-shirts, 1K environmental assets, and 120K episodes with rich annotations, which can be used to train a wide range of manipulation policies. We first follow the FoldNet pipeline to generate a large-scale dataset of physically simulatable T-shirts with diverse appearances and annotated semantic keypoints. Based on these semantic keypoints, we then generate manipulation demonstrations for different robotic embodiments through a unified rule-based framework. We use these demonstrations to train visuomotor policies, and experimental results demonstrate that models trained solely on our synthetic data can achieve over 90% end-to-end task success rates when directly deployed to unseen real-world environments and previously unseen T-shirts from arbitrary initial configurations. RTFF: Random-to-Target Fabric Flattening Policy using Dual-Arm Manipulator

Robotic fabric manipulation remains challenging due to fabric deformability and occlusions from wrinkles and the manipulator. This paper defines Random-to-Target Fabric Flattening (RTFF) as the task of bringing a randomly wrinkled fabric to an arbitrary user-specified wrinkle-free target pose. RTFF requires simultaneous flattening and pose alignment, where the two objectives are inherently coupled since flattening the fabric displaces its pose, while realigning it tends to introduce wrinkles. To solve this task, this paper anchors both the current and target fabric states to the same template mesh, enabling direct vertex-level wrinkle and pose assessment without registration. Building on this representation, a hybrid Imitation Learning--Visual Servoing (IL--VS) RTFF policy is proposed. A novel Mesh Action Chunking Transformer (MACT) leverages structured mesh observations to achieve goal-conditioned coarse alignment from a compact demonstration set, after which VS ensures precise convergence to the target. The policy is validated on a real dual-arm teleoperation system, demonstrating precise alignment to unseen target poses, fabric types, and scales. Enabling Robust Cloth Manipulation via Inference-Time Simulator-in-the-Loop Refinement

Simulator-in-the-loop optimization offers a promising inference-time mechanism for robot manipulation. It uses a physical simulator as a backend rollout engine to evaluate candidate trajectories in parallel and refine nominal actions online, a paradigm proven effective in rigid-body manipulation where state and contact are relatively tractable. We bring this paradigm to real-world cloth manipulation from a single RGB input through three pillars. (i) We design a scalable synthetic-data generation and inference-time rollout pipeline built on FLASH, a deformable-object simulator that provides a practical balance among physical fidelity, numerical stability, and rollout efficiency. (ii) We develop a real-to-sim module, trained purely on synthetic data, that maps a single RGB observation to simulation-compatible cloth state by fusing pretrained visual features with learnable canonical tokens. (iii) We perform online planning by coupling a sparse-mesh rollout backend with prior-guided MPPI, anchored at an offline-distilled policy trajectory, preserving manipulation-relevant deformation and contact while enabling sufficient parallel rollout batches. Real-robot experiments show higher success rates and stronger robustness than baseline methods.
