A Semantic Approach to the Academic Publishing Network: Document Vector Representations and Hybrid Structural-Semantic Fusion over OpenAlex Data

Abstract

Structural graph analysis of the academic publishing network captures the topological relationships between entities but does not see the content of works. Building on our structural approach, this work complements it with a semantic layer and a parameterized structural-semantic fusion. We represent scientific documents by citation-informed vector embeddings (SPECTER2) and store them in an embedded vector database keyed by the stable OpenAlex ID, so that they connect directly to the graph layer. We define a modular late-fusion function that combines semantic similarity (cosine of embeddings) and structural similarity (bibliographic coupling) with a tunable weight alpha whose value is chosen according to the specific task. On the corpus of VSB - Technical University of Ostrava we show two things: citation-informed embeddings agree with the expert OpenAlex topical taxonomy better than a TF-IDF baseline, and in a recommendation use case the structural, semantic, and combined signals carry information in different regimes depending on the available data. Hybrid fusion here is not a universally better method but an explicit mechanism for steering complementary signals according to the task. We release the whole approach as an open-source extension of the apnet library with a reproducible workflow.

Reconnecting Fragmented Citation Networks with Semantic Augmentation

Citation graphs are fundamental tools for modeling scientific structure, but are often fragmented due to missing citations of scientifically connected articles. To address this issue, we propose a computationally efficient hybrid framework integrating citation topology with large language model (LLM)-based text similarity. Using 662,369 Web of Science publications in Mathematics and Operations Research & Management Science, we augment the original graph by adding semantic edges from small, disconnected components and weighting existing citations according to textual similarity. Semantic augmentation substantially reduces fragmentation while preserving disciplinary homogeneity. Compared to embedding-only clustering, cluster detection on augmented graphs using the Leiden algorithm retains structural interpretability while offering multi-scale organization. The method scales efficiently to large datasets and offers a practical strategy for strengthening citation-based indicators without collapsing disciplinary boundaries.

Semantic Representation Learning of Scientific Literature based on Adaptive Feature and Graph Neural Network

Because most scientific literature data are unlabeled, semantic representation learning based on unsupervised graphs has become crucial. To enrich scientific-literature features, this paper proposes a semantic representation learning method based on adaptive features and graph neural networks. By introducing adaptive feature processing, scientific-literature features are considered globally and locally. The graph attention mechanism weights and aggregates features of scientific documents connected by citation relations, so that correlations among different documents can be expressed more effectively. In addition, an unsupervised graph neural network semantic representation learning method is proposed. By comparing the mutual information between positive and negative local semantic representations of scientific literature and the global graph semantic representation in the latent space, the graph neural network captures local and global information and improves semantic representation learning. Experimental results show that the proposed method is competitive for scientific literature classification.

Construction of a Battery Research Knowledge Graph using a Global Open Catalog

Battery research is a rapidly growing and highly interdisciplinary field, making it increasingly difficult to track relevant expertise and identify potential collaborators across institutional boundaries. In this work, we present a pipeline for constructing an author-centric knowledge graph of battery research built on OpenAlex, a large-scale open bibliographic catalogue. For each author, we derive a weighted research descriptors vector that combines coarse-grained OpenAlex concepts with fine-grained keyphrases extracted from titles and abstracts using KeyBERT with ChatGPT (gpt-3.5-turbo) as the backend model, selected after evaluating multiple alternatives. Vector components are weighted by research descriptor origin, authorship position, and temporal recency. The framework is applied to a corpus of 189,581 battery-related works. The resulting vectors support author-author similarity computation, community detection, and exploratory search through a browser-based interface. The knowledge graph is then serialized in RDF and linked to Wikidata identifiers, making it interoperable with external linked open data sources and extensible beyond the battery domain. Unlike prior author-centric analyses confined to institutional repositories, our approach operates at cross-institutional scale and grounds similarity in domain semantics rather than citation or co-authorship structure alone.
