Environmental noise obscures the content cues needed for whisper-to-normal conversion. We propose WhisperVC-AV, which restores acoustic content features while leaving the original WhisperVC conversion module unchanged. Its context-guided restoration module combines temporal acoustic context with synchronized lip features through attention and gated residual correction. Experiments on AISHELL6-Whisper show lower character error rates (CERs) than WhisperVC across three ASR systems, on clean speech and under all six signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions with MUSAN noise. The largest gains occur at 0 dB SNR, where Qwen3-ASR CER falls from 36.29% to 28.88%. WhisperVC-AV also improves predicted speech quality while maintaining speaker similarity. The CER gains extend to unseen background noise without retraining, while visual controls support the use of utterance-specific lip cues. Audio examples are available on our demo page.
Figures & tables
Figure 1: Overview of WhisperVC-AV. Acoustic and visual cues restore content features while the original WhisperVC conversion module remains unchanged. All speech branches share the same frozen ASR encoder. Dashed paths and feature-loss connections are used only during training.
Figure 2: Context-guided content restoration. Acoustic queries attend to projected lip features z within N(t) . Acoustic context ut and visual context ct jointly determine the gated residual, which the identity path adds to content features H to obtain restored features H^ .

Whispered speech lacks vocal fold vibration and fundamental frequency, resulting in degraded acoustic cues and making whisper-to-normal (W2N) conversion challenging, especially with limited parallel data. We propose WhispEar, a bidirectional framework based on unified semantic representations that capture speaking-mode-invariant information shared by whispered and normal speech. The framework contains both W2N and normal-to-whisper (N2W) models. Notably, the N2W model enables zero-shot pseudo-parallel whisper generation from abundant normal speech, allowing scalable data augmentation for W2N training. Increasing generated data consistently improves performance. We also release the largest bilingual (Chinese-English) whispered-normal parallel corpus to date. Experiments demonstrate that WhispEar outperforms strong baselines and benefits significantly from scalable pseudo-parallel data.

Whispered-to-normal (W2N) speech conversion aims to reconstruct missing phonation from whispered input while preserving content and speaker identity. This task is challenging due to temporal misalignment between whisper and voiced recordings and lack of paired data. We propose FlowW2N, a conditional flow matching approach that trains exclusively on synthetic, time-aligned whisper-normal pairs and conditions on domain-invariant features. We exploit high-level ASR embeddings that exhibits strong invariance between synthetic and real whispered speech, enabling generalization to real whispers despite never observing it during training. We verify this invariance across ASR layers and propose a selection criterion optimizing content informativeness and cross-domain invariance. Our method achieves SOTA intelligibility on the CHAINS and wTIMIT datasets, reducing Word Error Rate by 26-46% relative to prior work while using only 10 steps at inference and requiring no real paired data, validated by a subjective listening study and F0-contour analysis.

Streaming zero-shot voice conversion (VC) has become increasingly popular due to its potential for real-time applications. The recently proposed MeanVC achieves lightweight streaming zero-shot VC, but it has several limitations: its chunk-wise autoregressive denoising doubles the effective training sequence length, conversion quality degrades under small-chunk settings, and its timbre encoder directly relies on reference mel-spectrograms, making it sensitive to reference audio quality. To address these limitations we propose MeanVC 2. We introduce future-receptive chunking (FRC), which explicitly schedules past and future receptive fields across diffusion transformer decoder layers and removes clean-chunk teacher forcing. By incorporating bounded future context, FRC enables stable conversion with a 40 ms chunk size. We further introduce a universal timbre token encoder, which constructs a timbre representation from a global speaker embedding and retrieves fine-grained timbre cues via cross-attention, improving robustness to low-quality references and enhancing zero-shot speaker similarity. Experimental results show that MeanVC 2 significantly outperforms MeanVC, while reducing latency from 211 ms to 110 ms. Audio samples are publicly available. The source code will be publicly released.
