Abstract

The Natural Image Quality Evaluator (NIQE) scores an image by its statistical distance from a model fitted on pristine images, and its distributed model is fitted on photographs. We release the Radiology Image Quality Evaluator (RIQE), a NIQE-style model fitted on 3,792 full-dose slices from 158 patients of the public LDCT-and-Projection-data collection, with a declared intensity mapping, a manifest of every slice and a script that reproduces the fit. On 40 held-out patients, RIQE ranks reduced-dose reconstructions, simulated by projection-domain noise insertion, worse than the full-dose reconstruction of the same slice in 240 of 240 chest and 230 of 240 abdominal pairs, and ranks images with 20% more noise worse than their source in 97.5-100% of cases. Its preferences among filtered images, however, do not follow lesion signal. With a 4 mm, +10 HU lesion inserted in noisy abdominal slices, RIQE prefers bilateral filtering to the unfiltered image in every image up to a 32 HU residual, at which 29% of the lesion's matched-filter signal remains and its detectability index falls from 0.51 to 0.33; it never prefers Gaussian smoothing, which at the same 32 HU residual leaves 70% of the signal and a detectability index of 0.48. Fitted on photographs with the parameters published for NIQE, the same code ranks every simulated reduced-dose abdominal image better than its full-dose counterpart. RIQE is suited to ranking a degraded image against its source; under the conditions tested it should not be the sole criterion for selecting, comparing or tuning denoisers.

Learning Where to Look and How to Judge: Resolution-agnostic Image Quality Assessment with Quality-aware Saliency

No-reference image quality assessment (NR IQA) has recently benefited from deep and multimodal models, yet many SOTA systems still violate at least one basic requirement: they either discard critical quality cues via aggressive resizing, fail to generalize across resolutions, cannot be jointly trained on heterogeneous IQA datasets with mismatched MOS scales, or require prohibitive computation. We present \textbf{ReLIQS}, a model for \textbf{Re}solution-agnostic \textbf{L}earning for \textbf{I}mage \textbf{Q}uality with \textbf{S}aliency, which is resolution-agnostic, preserves original-resolution quality cues, learns from multiple subjective studies, and remains computationally efficient and budget-adaptive. ReLIQS is a CLIP-based multiscale patch-driven architecture that learns both \emph{where to look} and \emph{how to judge} quality. Fixed-size patches are sampled across multiple resolutions, including the original resolution, and encoded with a CLIP vision backbone. A lightweight Perceptual Importance Estimator then predicts IQA-specific importance maps to select a small set of informative patches, and a Latent Quality Axis Module aggregates their embeddings into a single image-level score. Across authentic, synthetic, and AIGC benchmarks spanning diverse resolutions and distortions, ReLIQS generalizes better than strong CNN-, CLIP-, and MLLM-based baselines with matching or reduced computational cost.

ClinReadNet: A clinical reading-inspired network for low-dose abdominal CT image quality assessment

In abdominal CT imaging, developing a low-dose, no-reference image quality assessment (No-reference IQA) model that mimics doctors' reading habits for evaluating CT image quality has significant practical value. This paper proposes a novel deep learning-based framework, ClinReadNet, whose design aligns with the clinical reading logic of radiologists: first, it introduces the Sobel ordinal quality network (SOQN) module, which can simultaneously focus on edge details highly relevant to image quality and the quality distribution pattern of the entire image, accurately matching the clinical image-reading judgment habit of "considering both local details and overall context"; second, the framework integrates the (shifted) window multi-scale temperature multi-head self-attention ((S)W-MTMSA) module, which further replicates the radiologists' image-reading process of shifting from overall scanning to local focusing, and accurately locks in regions of interest through multi-sharpness attention; third, it designs the hierarchical ranked probability score (HRPS) loss function, which combines the dual logics of coarse classification and fine classification, while paying attention to the distance information between grading labels, effectively improving the performance of image quality assessment. Experiments conducted on the LDCTIQAG2023 dataset show that the proposed method achieves the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance: the values of Pearson's linear correlation coefficient (PLCC), Spearman's rank-order correlation coefficient (SROCC), and Kendall's rank-order correlation coefficient (KROCC) reach 0.9507, 0.9554, and 0.8629 respectively, with the sum of their absolute values (Score) being 2.7690, outperforming existing methods.

Agentic Autoresearch for CT Reconstruction

Comparing CT reconstruction methods fairly is labor-intensive and largely manual, and many benchmarks use idealized data. We ask whether a large language model (LLM) agent can do the labor of reconstruction research on its own, and whether a ranking measured on ideal data predicts behavior under realistic noise. We built an agentic loop: the agent edits a solver, runs a short cluster job, reads one frozen metric, and revises. The metric is a calibrated headroom score against the FBP baseline, inside the field of view; every method shares the same differentiable fan-beam projector. We benchmarked 26 methods on Mayo low-dose CT (noise-limited) and a 128-view sparse-view breast task from the noiseless DL-Sparse-View Challenge, with validation-selected iterations scored on a held-out test set. Every trained breast model was then re-scored on noisy inputs (I_0 = 10^5 photons) without retraining, and separately retrained on matched noise. The agent independently implemented, tuned, and benchmarked all 26 methods, and recombined them into a compact solver of 969 parameters that ties the top Mayo tier at the 1% level using 0.4% of the champion's parameters. Benchmarking gives a tier of statistically indistinguishable top methods, not one winner. Mild input noise nearly inverts the breast ranking: the noiseless champion (a supervised image denoiser, hr 0.89) collapses to 0.00, while a learned primal-dual method rises to champion (0.72 to 0.93). An ideal-data leaderboard therefore does not predict robustness. The inversion is a transfer effect, not a permanent deficit: retraining on matched noise restores much of the clean ranking (Spearman rho 0.04 to 0.61). Noise is only the easiest confounder in an open-ended set (beam hardening, scatter, anatomy, disease), so no single-factor challenge certifies generality. Benchmarks should model a broad spectrum of realistic factors at once.
