Abstract

We propose a Gauss-map variation (GMV) model for image denoising that measures the spatial variation of the tangent-plane projectors of the scaled image graph. We establish an equivalent representation of the regularizer in terms of the corresponding Gauss map and, using differential geometric tools including tubular coordinates and the Frenet frame, analyze its behavior across general C2C^2 and piecewise C2C^2 boundaries. The resulting estimates provide edge- and corner-contrast preservation properties. To solve the proposed model, we introduce a bilinear decomposition involving a unit normal field and a scalar magnitude field and develop an Anderson-accelerated majorization--minimization algorithm. The normal field subproblem admits an explicit pointwise majorization--minimization update, which is combined with an Anderson acceleration. For both L1L^1 and L2L^2 data fidelity terms, we establish sufficient decrease and boundedness of the iterates and prove that the generated sequence converges to a critical point of the penalized model. Numerical experiments on synthetic and natural images demonstrate the boundary preserving capability of the proposed model and its competitive performance in removing Gaussian and impulsive noise.

A Globally Convergent Algorithm for Total Scaled-Gradient Variation via Cone-Constrained Bilinear Decomposition

The total scaled-gradient variation (TSGV) regularizer, derived from sparse modeling of piecewise-linear structures, has been shown to preserve edges and corners in image restoration. However, its highly nonconvex and nonlinear nature poses severe computational challenges, as existing methods often suffer from parameter sensitivity or lack convergence guarantees. To overcome this, we propose a tailored bilinear decomposition that decouples the nonlinear weighted gradient in the TSGV regularizer. This approach yields an equivalent optimization problem governed by cone or sphere constraints, depending on the chosen scaling function. In particular, the cone constraint plays a central role in characterizing edge- and corner-preserving behavior. We solve this reformulation using the alternating minimization method (AMM) equipped with a majorization--minimization strategy, ensuring a monotonic decrease in energy without step-size tuning. Furthermore, we provide a geometric interpretation of the edge-preserving properties of these constraints by analyzing their asymptotic behavior near image singularities. We establish the global convergence of the proposed method to a critical point within the Kurdyka--Łojasiewicz framework. Extensive numerical experiments on Gaussian denoising and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging show that the proposed method achieves PSNR and SSIM competitive with or superior to representative variational methods, especially at high noise levels, and improves the structural reconstruction under dense and sparse scanning.

A locally statistical active contour model for SAR image segmentation can be solved by denoising algorithms

In this paper, we propose a novel locally statistical variational active contour model based on I-divergence-TV denoising model, which hybrides geodesic active contour (GAC) model with active contours without edges (ACWE) model, and can be used to segment images corrupted by multiplicative gamma noise. By adding a diffusion term into the level set evolution (LSE) equation of the proposed model, we construct a reaction-diffusion (RD) equation, which can gradually regularize the level set function (LSF) to be piecewise constant in each segment domain and gain the stable solution. We further transform the proposed model into a general ROF model by adding a proximity term ,and it can be solved by a fast denoising algorithm proposed by Jia-Zhao or soved by BM3D and NLM denoising algorithm, which also provide a unified solution framework for formally generalized-ROF-like subproblems arising in multivariate splitting algorithms.

A geometry-based deep equilibrium model for image restoration under multiplicative Gamma noise

We propose a deep learning framework for image restoration from images degraded by both multiplicative Gamma noise and blur. Unlike conventional deep equilibrium (DEQ) models that rely on implicit neural regularization, the proposed method learns an explicit and interpretable regularizer parameterized by geometric priors associated with surface area and mean curvature. To minimize the resulting variational model, we develop a mirror descent algorithm tailored to the commonly used Gamma-noise fidelity terms. Leveraging the Kurdyka-Lojasiewicz property for functions defined in oo-minimal structures, we establish the global convergence of the generated iterates to a critical point. Experimental results on both grayscale and color image restoration demonstrate that the proposed method consistently outperforms representative model-based approaches while achieving performance comparable to state-of-the-art DEQ models based on implicit regularization, despite requiring substantially fewer trainable parameters.
