Abstract

Generative models have the potential to accelerate inorganic materials discovery by enabling inverse design, but generating experimentally realisable crystals remains challenging. Oxidation states are widely used to assess the compositional validity of crystals and guide inorganic materials discovery. While existing generative models for crystals can generate materials with charge-neutral oxidation-state assignments, they poorly reproduce the distributions of oxidation states observed in synthesised materials. To address this limitation, we propose OxiGen, an oxidation-state-aware crystal diffusion model that explicitly represents oxidation states during generation. OxiGen enforces global charge neutrality by construction using a structured output layer with exact inference over a finite-state automaton. Empirically, OxiGen substantially improves oxidation-state fidelity, generates the highest rate of stable, unique, and novel crystals among evaluated methods, and maintains high compositional validity even under property conditioning.

Chemical filters for ultra-high-throughput materials screening and generation

Generative artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming materials design by enabling de novo exploration of immense chemical spaces. Yet a large proportion of AI-generated compositions remain implausible, violating established chemical principles, which limits the reliability and interpretability of generative materials design. Here, we introduce a chemical validity operator that recasts heuristic chemical rules as a configurable algorithmic prior for evaluating and guiding generative materials discovery. Built on the open-source SMACT package, a data-informed oxidation-state model exposes tunable thresholds, allowing users to interpolate continuously between permissive and conservative chemical constraints, while supporting both exploratory and conservative materials-design workflows. Benchmarking six state-of-the-art generative models for inorganic crystals shows that most reproduce stoichiometry but under-represent realistic oxidation-state combinations, and that filtering removes compositions reliant on rarely observed oxidation states while preserving low-energy compounds near the convex hull. Beyond screening, the same operator can also serve as a reinforcement-learning reward, steering a latent diffusion model towards chemically grounded compositions. By encoding chemical heuristics and observations, this work establishes a foundation for oxidation-state-aware generative models.

Finetuning-Free Diffusion Model with Adaptive Constraint Guidance for Inorganic Crystal Structure Generation

Generative diffusion models have emerged as powerful tools for the discovery of inorganic crystal structures, yet steering their sampling process toward user-defined physical and chemical objectives remains challenging. We present a computational framework that integrates adaptive constraint guidance into a pre-trained crystal diffusion model, enabling the generation of candidate structures that satisfy targeted structural and chemical requirements without model retraining. The approach incorporates differentiable constraint functions directly during sampling, providing an interpretable mechanism for expert-driven exploration of the crystal structure space. To assess the reliability of generated candidates, we introduce a multi-stage validation workflow combining descriptor-based analysis, duplicate removal, comparison with reference crystal databases, graph neural network energy prediction, and thermodynamic stability evaluation through convex-hull analysis. The framework is applied to several classes of inorganic compounds and to constraints involving atomic volume, local coordination environments, and near-neighbor structural motifs. Results demonstrate that adaptive guidance effectively redirects the sampling distribution toward structures exhibiting the desired characteristics while preserving chemical plausibility. Subsequent validation reveals which generated candidates remain viable after energetic and thermodynamic screening. The proposed methodology provides a practical and transparent strategy for incorporating expert knowledge into crystal generative models and establishes a general computational framework for constrained materials discovery.

Topology-Stratified Materials Discovery with A Flow-Based Generative Model

Accurate generation of crystal structures is the foundation to the discovery of high-performance materials for extreme-environment applications, such as aerospace, additive manufacturing, and fusion energy systems. Although generative modeling has emerged as a promising approach for crystal design, its performance remains limited by the complex crystal structures and diverse chemical compositions. In this work, we develop UFO-MGen, a universal flow-based generative model that learns topological features of Wyckoff representations and leverages this information to accurately generate crystals across vast structural and chemical spaces. Compared with state-of-the-art generative models, UFO-MGen achieves the highest crystal generation success rate under a rigorous multi-stability evaluation framework, the highest SUN (stable, unique, novel) rate, and a remarkable extrapolation capability that has not been reported by previous models. Furthermore, a fine-tuning module is implemented to UFO-MGen for property-constrained crystal generation, enabling the inverse materials design toward target properties. The UFO-MGen opens a new avenue for accelerated materials discovery and providing a foundation for universal materials intelligence.
