Abstract

Accurate page transcription remains difficult for vision language models under limited input and training budgets. We present SP-DocReader, a self-play framework for optical character recognition (OCR) that targets residual errors after supervised fine-tuning. Reading Discrepancy Masking aligns reference and generated model tokens through a longest common subsequence, then scores unmatched positions with their full conditioning prefixes. Focused Fidelity Loss adds direct negative log-likelihood supervision at unmatched ground-truth positions. Only the OCR module is trained, while the backbone remains frozen. We derive the combined gradient to distinguish relative score optimization from direct supervision. Compared with SFT-2, SP-DR-3 reduces Vary-600K character error rate on both backbones. On Qwen3-VL-4B, it reduces character error rate by approximately 54 percent and improves DocVQA Average Normalized Levenshtein Similarity (ANLS) by 3.7 points. These results show the value of focusing self-play training on the discrepancies that remain after supervised fine-tuning.

FastOCR: Dynamic Visual Fixation via KV Cache Pruning for Efficient Document Parsing

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have shown strong promise on Optical Character Recognition (OCR), yet the sheer number of visual tokens required to encode dense documents incurs prohibitive inference cost. Existing pruning methods rely on physical eviction, e.g., permanently discarding visual tokens during the prefill stage. While effective for natural images, this strategy fundamentally breaks down on OCR, where virtually every visual token may correspond to a character or structural element, and any irreversible loss leads to catastrophic accuracy degradation. We observe that, although document images appear globally dense and seemingly unprunable, the model's attention to them is in fact temporally sparse: at each decoding step it concentrates on a small region that shifts gradually across steps, much as a human reader fixates on successive words rather than perceiving an entire page at once. Motivated by this Dynamic Visual Fixation phenomenon, we recast the intractable global pruning problem as a tractable local, dynamic one and propose FastOCR, a training-free framework with two complementary modules. Specifically, Focal-Guided Pruning identifies a small set of focal layers and selects the most task-relevant visual tokens from them at each step, while Cross-Step Fixation Reuse exploits the gradual shift of fixation to warm-start each step from the previous one. By dynamically adjusting which tokens are attended rather than evicting any from the cache, FastOCR avoids permanent information loss. Extensive experiments show that FastOCR serves as a plug-and-play acceleration module, generalizing consistently across five VLMs of varying sizes and architectures. On Qwen2.5-VL, FastOCR retains 98% of the unpruned model's accuracy while attending to only 5% of the visual tokens per decoding step, reducing attention latency by 3.0×\times.

PaddleOCR-VL-1.6: Expanding the Frontier of Document Parsing with Under-Optimized Region Refinement and Progressive Post-Training

We introduce PaddleOCR-VL-1.6, an upgraded compact document parsing model built upon PaddleOCR-VL-1.5. Although PaddleOCR-VL-1.5 establishes a strong 0.9B baseline, its remaining errors concentrate in under-optimized regions where model behavior is unstable, data coverage is sparse, or supervision is unreliable. Rather than expanding the training corpus indiscriminately, PaddleOCR-VL-1.6 introduces a region-aware data optimization framework that identifies weak regions from the previous model, applies targeted enhancement to these regions, and improves the reliability of supervision signals. It further adopts a progressive post-training recipe based on curated data selection and reinforcement learning, pushing model performance to a higher level through staged optimization. PaddleOCR-VL-1.6 achieves a new state-of-the-art score of 96.33% on OmniDocBench v1.6, demonstrates strong competitiveness against top-tier VLMs, and provides a practical post-training recipe for the PaddleOCR-VL series.

HunyuanOCR-1.5: Making Lightweight OCR VLMs Faster and Better

We present HunyuanOCR-1.5, a lightweight end-to-end OCR-specialized vision-language model. HunyuanOCR unifies document parsing, text spotting, information extraction, text-image translation, and multi-image document understanding within a single end-to-end VLM. Building upon the lightweight architecture of HunyuanOCR-1.0, HunyuanOCR-1.5 does not redesign the backbone, but systematically improves both efficiency and capability. For efficiency, we adapt DFlash to OCR decoding, significantly reducing the latency of long structured outputs such as dense documents, tables, and formulas while preserving output distribution. Powered by DFlash, HunyuanOCR-1.5 achieves a 6.37x Transformer inference speedup and a 2.14x speedup under vLLM, delivering the fastest inference among lightweight OCR VLMs. For capability, we propose Agentic Data Flow, an agent-driven data construction system that transforms model weaknesses into executable data requirements and autonomously performs material search, quality verification, and pipeline development. It substantially improves long-tail capabilities in ancient-script OCR, fine-grained chart and table parsing, multi-image text-centric QA, low-resource multilingual parsing, and document hallucination evaluation. HunyuanOCR-1.5 ranks among the top-tier end-to-end OCR solutions on OmniDocBench v1.6 while achieving new performance milestones across these long-tail tasks. Combined with an upgraded pretraining and post-training recipe, HunyuanOCR-1.5 further extends its capability in high-resolution, long-context, and multi-task scenarios. Experiments demonstrate faster inference, broader OCR capability coverage, and the deployment advantages of a lightweight end-to-end model. We will release the model weights and training code to support future research and real-world OCR applications.
