Abstract

As joint audio-video generation models become more capable, they can generate audio-visual scenes exhibiting three forms of complexity: multi-event composition, multi-layer audio mixture, and asymmetric cross-modal relations. However, current evaluations largely reuse metrics from earlier simple and unidirectional tasks. They typically evaluate an audio-video clip as a whole and rely on simple predefined relations, making them unsuitable for these increasingly complex scenes. We propose an event-centric evaluation framework that disentangles audio and visual events at the event level, analyzes each event independently, cross-validates relations across modalities, and aggregates the judgments into a coarse-to-fine, three-level consistency metric. The metric assesses global narrative harmony, event-level temporal synchronization, and fine-grained attribute alignment, providing a general formulation for audio-video consistency evaluation across diverse generation settings and cross-modal relations. We instantiate the metric as AVC-Reward, a trainable audio-video reward model. To evaluate the agreement between automatic judgments and human perception across generation paradigms and relation complexities, we construct AVC-Benchmark, which is primarily built from diverse positive and negative samples generated by various types of audio-video generation models. AVC-Reward achieves state-of-the-art alignment with human judgment among automatic methods, provides interpretable rationales that localize failures, and improves the audio-video consistency of a joint generation model when used as an online reinforcement-learning signal. AVBench: Human-Aligned and Automated Evaluation Benchmark for Audio-Video Generative Models

Rapid advances in audio-video (AV) generation have enabled high-fidelity synthesis with synchronized sound, particularly for human-related scenarios involving speech and interactions. Yet evaluation for AV generation remains at an early stage, with only a few coarse-grained benchmarks for human-related scenarios and relying on limited preset evaluations with generic multimodal LLMs, leading to inaccurate assessments of model capabilities. To address these issues, we introduce AVBench, a fully automated benchmark tailored for human-centric AV generation. AVBench is built on two key designs for comprehensive and accurate evaluation: (i) Human-centric and fine-grained metrics. AVBench integrates ten evaluation dimensions designed for human-centered real-world scenarios, covering visual quality, audio quality, and multi-level consistency across modalities. These practical metrics capture human-related details that existing benchmarks often overlook. (ii) Specialized evaluators via preference learning. To address the lack of specialized training data, we construct large-scale supervision by transforming real-world videos into diverse training pairs with controlled perturbations. After fine-tuning on this high-quality dataset, the evaluators learn to reliably detect subtle cross-modal inconsistencies. Crucially, instead of producing discrete textual judgment, AVBench derives continuous evaluation scores from the model's prediction confidence on binary decisions. This probabilistic scoring mechanism enables a more reliable assessment than traditional VQA-style evaluation and aligns closely with human judgment. Taken together, AVBench offers automated evaluation for AV generation, demonstrates strong potential for data filtering, and serves as a differentiable reward signal for Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF).

SyncReward: Human-Aligned Synchronization Reward for Audio-Visual Generation

Recent years have witnessed rapid progress in joint audio--visual generation. However, audio--visual synchronization remains a challenge, as generated speech and sound often temporally misalign with visual events. A key bottleneck is the lack of human-annotated data, reliable evaluation benchmarks, and synchronization-aware evaluation models for generated audio--visual outputs. To address these limitations, we conduct a comprehensive study spanning data, benchmarking, and reward modeling. We first introduce SyncReward-Data-80K, a dataset containing 80K professional synchronization ratings for clips from eight audio--visual generators. A taxonomy-guided construction pipeline covers four sound-event families: Speech, Onset, Instrument, and Ambient. We further construct SyncReward-Bench, a held-out benchmark of 1K clips, each independently rated by multiple professionals. Using this benchmark, we systematically evaluate specialized synchronization metrics and omni-modal models, revealing their substantial misalignment with human judgments. Finally, we develop SyncReward, a reward model that combines semantic--temporal contrastive pretraining on real clips with human supervision on generated clips. As an evaluation metric, SyncReward achieves the strongest agreement with human ratings among the evaluated methods. As a reward, it improves synchronization through inference-time best-of-NN selection and reinforcement learning based post-training. We will release the data, benchmark, model, and code at https://github.com/WeChatCV/SyncReward.

VA-Judger: Reward Modeling from Human Preference Feedback for Joint Video-Audio Generation

Using reinforcement learning to post-train joint video-audio generation models requires a reward signal. Existing methods construct this reward by combining metrics for individual quality dimensions, including audio quality, visual fidelity, and synchronization. However, these metrics evaluate perceptual dimensions separately and fail to capture the overall semantic and temporal coherence among the text prompt, video, and audio that shapes human preferences. Optimizing models against these metrics encourages reward hacking, generating video-audio content that achieves high scores on these metrics yet appears incoherent or unfaithful to human viewers. To address this problem, we first construct a large-scale human-preference dataset VAPref-10K for joint video-audio generation, comprising 9K prompts and 10.3K fine-grained paired comparisons from generation models. We also introduce the VA-Judger-Bench benchmark with both in-domain and out-of-domain model comparisons to evaluate whether reward models truly align with human preferences. We further propose VA-Judger, a chain-of-thought omni-reward model for joint video-audio generation. In particular, VA-Judger first learns from pairs with clear quality gaps to establish structured output and coarse preference discrimination, then distills reliable preference explanations for harder near-quality comparisons via rejection sampling verified against human annotations, and finally performs dimension-wise reinforcement learning that decomposes human feedback into individual quality dimensions for denser reward signals than a single binary preference label. Experiments show that VA-Judger outperforms metric baselines in predicting human preferences on both in-domain and out-of-domain evaluations. Using its human-aligned rewards for post-training audio-video generation model also yields significant improvements in generation quality.
