Proofs of strong forms of the Bovdi--Geche universality conjecture and a complex analogue

Authors: Victor Bovdi, Ambrus Pal

Abstract

We prove two universality theorems for neural networks consisting of a single neuron. First we prove a strong form of the Bovdi--Geche universality conjecture on neurons over finite fields, where the activation function is a certain modification of the discrete logarithm, using the Weil bound on multiplicative character sums over finite fields. Then we show a generalisation of Aizenberg's universality theorem for complex binary neurons with a weight vector independent of the target function, positively answering another question in the literature. The proof of the latter uses an equidistribution theorem for the dilates of certain maps into tori.

Approximation Theory for Neural Networks: Old and New

Universal approximation theorems provide a mathematical explanation for the expressive power of neural networks. They assert that, under mild conditions on the activation function, feedforward neural networks are dense in broad function classes, such as continuous functions on compact subsets of Rd\mathbb{R}^d, LpL^p spaces, or Sobolev spaces. Over the past four decades, these qualitative universality results have evolved into a rich quantitative theory addressing approximation rates, parameter efficiency, and the role of architectural features such as depth and width. This survey presents several glimpses into this theory. We review classical density results for single-hidden-layer networks, as well as quantitative bounds that relate approximation error to network size and smoothness assumptions on target functions. Particular emphasis is placed on depth--width trade-offs and on results demonstrating that deeper architectures can achieve superior parameter efficiency for structured function classes. In addition to standard feedforward neural networks, we also review recent developments on Kolmogorov--Arnold Networks (KANs), which offer an alternative architectural paradigm and whose approximation-theoretic properties have begun to attract significant theoretical attention.

On the Topology of Neural Network Superlevel Sets

We show that neural networks with activations satisfying a Riccati-type ordinary differential equation condition, an assumption arising in recent universal approximation results in the uniform topology, produce Pfaffian outputs on analytic domains with format controlled only by the architecture. Consequently, superlevel sets, as well as Lie bracket rank drop loci for neural network parameterized vector fields, admit architecture-only bounds on topological complexity, in particular on total Betti numbers, uniformly over all weights.

Linear Independence of Polynomial Compositions with Bounded Input Degree

We prove the weak composition-independence conjectures of Kohn, Marchetti, Massarenti and Mella. The proof uses deformations of rational curves and a single kernel of the linearized equation. Riemann-Roch gives a contradiction from tangent fields with controlled poles. By settling these conjectures, we prove that a neural network with a general polynomial activation function of sufficiently large degree is identifiable.
