Effective Pragmatic Interlocutor
Effective pragmatic interlocutors, whether human or AI, are those capable of understanding and responding appropriately to nuanced, indirect communication. Current research focuses on evaluating and improving large language models' ability to interpret non-literal language and adapt to different conversational partners, often employing generative evaluation methods and analyzing interlocutor awareness within dialogue systems. This work is crucial for advancing human-computer interaction and building more natural, robust conversational AI, impacting fields ranging from customer service to education. Challenges remain in accurately modeling intentions and handling non-cooperative dialogue.
