Communicative Intent
Communicative intent, the underlying purpose behind communication, is a burgeoning research area focusing on how humans and AI interpret and generate messages beyond their literal meaning. Current research investigates how communicative efficiency influences language structure (e.g., in sign language), how large language models (LLMs) interpret nuanced expressions and mathematical notation, and how to improve AI's ability to understand and respond appropriately to non-literal language. These advancements are crucial for developing more natural and effective human-computer interaction, improving AI's ability to understand and respond to complex human communication, and ultimately enhancing the design of more intuitive and user-friendly AI systems.
