Vehicle in the Loop

Vehicle-in-the-loop (VIL) simulation integrates a physical vehicle into a virtual environment to rigorously test autonomous driving systems under diverse and potentially hazardous conditions, addressing safety concerns and reducing the need for extensive real-world testing. Current research emphasizes developing more realistic and cost-effective VIL setups, often combining aspects of model-in-the-loop (MIL) simulations to improve efficiency and diagnostic capabilities. This approach is crucial for validating autonomous vehicle performance, particularly in complex scenarios like urban driving and high-speed maneuvers, ultimately contributing to safer and more reliable self-driving technology.
