Contrastive RL
RL: Reinforcement Learning
Overview
Contrastive reinforcement learning uses comparisons—often through InfoNCE objectives—to learn which states, actions, or trajectories are compatible with a goal, enabling reward-free or goal-conditioned control. Work spans online and offline navigation, locomotion, and manipulation, with methods such as contrastive critics, action chunks, and direction-conditioned policies; language-model training also uses contrasts between successful and failed reasoning or tool-use trajectories. These approaches can reduce reliance on hand-crafted rewards and support transfer, but depend strongly on which examples are contrasted and how well learned representations match task geometry. A central tension is that a contrastive score may rank actions well without being a calibrated value, making reliable action selection, exploration, and generalization to rarely visited goals open challenges.
