Diffusion-Based Image Editing

Overview

The field studies how diffusion models can make targeted changes to existing images, from replacing objects and editing text to transferring style, adjusting faces, and relighting scenes. Approaches include instruction-tuned editors, reference and mask conditioning, and training-free techniques that steer attention, latent representations, or denoising trajectories. Recent work also uses reinforcement learning, multi-view geometry, and faster few-step models to handle complex edits, preserve scene structure, and support high-resolution or interactive use. A central challenge is balancing faithful instruction following with preservation of identity and unedited regions, while keeping inference efficient and evaluation reliable.

Universal Image Immunization against Diffusion-based Image Editing via Semantic Injection

Diffusion model advances have enabled powerful text-guided image editing, but also raise ethical and legal risks such as deepfakes and unauthorized use. To prevent these risks, adversarial attack-based image immunization has emerged as a promising defense against AI-driven semantic manipulation. Yet, most existing approaches require image-specific optimization or additional neural networks at inference time, hindering scalability and practicality. In this paper, we propose the first universal adversarial perturbation-based image immunization framework that generates a single, image-agnostic adversarial perturbation specifically designed for diffusion-based editing pipelines. Inspired by UAP used in targeted attacks, our method aims to generate a UAP that induces diffusion models to misinterpret the input image as a specific semantic target. Simultaneously, it suppresses original content to misdirect the model's attention during editing, thereby effectively blocking unauthorized edits by overwriting the image's original semantics via the UAP. Extensive experiments show that our method, as the first universal immunization approach, significantly outperforms several baselines in the UAP setting. Notably, despite the inherent difficulty of universal perturbations, our method achieves competitive or superior performance compared to image-specific methods under a more restricted perturbation budget, while also exhibiting strong black-box transferability across diverse diffusion models.

CoCoDiff: Correspondence-Consistent Diffusion Model for Fine-grained Style Transfer

Transferring visual style between images while preserving semantic correspondence between similar objects remains a central challenge in computer vision. While existing methods have made great strides, most of them operate at global level but overlook region-wise and even pixel-wise semantic correspondence. To address this, we propose CoCoDiff, a novel training-free and low-cost style transfer framework that leverages pretrained latent diffusion models to achieve fine-grained, semantically consistent stylization. We identify that correspondence cues within generative diffusion models are under-explored and that content consistency across semantically matched regions is often neglected. CoCoDiff introduces a pixel-wise semantic correspondence module that mines intermediate diffusion features to construct a dense alignment map between content and style images. Furthermore, a cycle-consistency module then enforces structural and perceptual alignment across iterations, yielding object and region level stylization that preserves geometry and detail. Despite requiring no additional training or supervision, CoCoDiff delivers state-of-the-art visual quality and strong quantitative results, outperforming methods that rely on extra training or annotations.

Controlling Your Image via Simplified Vector Graphics

Recent advances in image generation have achieved remarkable visual quality, while a fundamental challenge remains: Can image generation be controlled at the element level, enabling intuitive modifications such as adjusting shapes, altering colors, or adding and removing objects? In this work, we address this challenge by introducing layer-wise controllable generation through simplified vector graphics (VGs). Our approach first efficiently parses images into hierarchical VG representations that are semantic-aligned and structurally coherent. Building on this representation, we design a novel image synthesis framework guided by VGs, allowing users to freely modify elements and seamlessly translate these edits into photorealistic outputs. By leveraging the structural and semantic features of VGs in conjunction with noise prediction, our method provides precise control over geometry, color, and object semantics. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in diverse applications, including image editing, object-level manipulation, and fine-grained content creation, establishing a new paradigm for controllable image generation. Dynamics-Inspired Diffusion for Foreground-Preserving Document Background Editing

We revisit diffusion-based generation for structured visual content and identify a fundamental limitation of existing approaches: foreground preservation and background stylization are typically enforced through external interventions, such as hard masking or corrective post-processing, rather than arising from the generative process itself. Here, we define background as the generative content outside designated foreground regions (e.g., text and layout elements), while preserving the structural integrity of the foreground. We propose a dynamical systems perspective on diffusion, in which controllable generation is formulated as trajectory shaping in latent space. Under this view, we introduce Auxiliary Context Diffusion (ACD), a state-space control framework that integrates heterogeneous signals (layout-derived foreground indicators, document summaries, and style representations) directly into the diffusion dynamics. This formulation induces time-scale separation in the generative process, where foreground regions become dynamically stabilized while background regions remain expressive. To address stylistic drift across multi-page documents, we further introduce style directions as persistent latent constraints that guide diffusion trajectories within a shared stylistic subspace. Unlike prior approaches that entangle style with prompt conditioning, our formulation enables reusable and consistent style control across pages. We validate the proposed perspective through controlled experiments on synthetic document benchmarks, demonstrating that trajectory-level control provides a unified and extensible mechanism for structured generation without retraining, hard masking, or corrective post-processing. These results suggest a new direction for controllable diffusion in document-centric and multimodal applications.

TexTailor: Inference-Time Textual Guidance Tailoring for Multimodal Diffusion Transformers

Recent breakthroughs of transformer-based diffusion models, particularly with Multimodal Diffusion Transformers (MMDiT) driven models like FLUX and Qwen Image, have facilitated thrilling experiences in visual generation. However, these models rely only on the interactions between textual conditions and visual features to produce semantically aligned images. Once the interactions fail to reflect the nuanced compositional structure of the prompt, the generated images might be unsatisfactory. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of how different blocks and their interactions with textual conditions is crucial for better understanding the intrinsic attributes and for enhancing their interactions accordingly to strengthen the prompts adherence. In this paper, we first develop a systematic pipeline to comprehensively investigate each block's functionality by removing, disabling, and enhancing textual hidden-states at corresponding blocks. Our analysis reveals that 1) semantic information appears in earlier blocks and finer details are rendered in later blocks, 2) removing specific blocks is usually less disruptive than disabling text conditions, and 3) enhancing textual conditions in selective blocks improves semantic attributes. Building on these observations, we propose \method, a novel inference-time method for tailoring block-wise textual guidance. Our approach not only improves text-image alignment but also enables a range of downstream applications, including precise editing and inference acceleration. Extensive experiments demonstrated that our method outperforms various baselines and remains flexible across text-to-image generation, image editing, and inference acceleration. Our method improves T2I-Combench from 56.92% to 63.00% and GenEval from 66.42% to 71.63% on SD3.5, without sacrificing synthesis quality.

EraseLoRA: MLLM-Driven Foreground Exclusion and Background Subtype Aggregation for Dataset-Free Object Removal

Object removal must prevent the masked target from reappearing and reconstruct the occluded background with structural and contextual fidelity, rather than merely filling a hole plausibly. Recent dataset-free approaches manipulate the diffusion model's internal self-attention to prevent it from referencing the masked region, yet they fail in two critical ways: (i) they treat the masked region as the sole foreground, misinterpreting non-target objects as background and regenerating them, and (ii) they apply uniform attention constraints without distinguishing diverse background subtypes, leading to textural blurring and structural misalignment. Both failures stem from the absence of explicit background-aware reasoning. We propose EraseLoRA, a dataset-free framework that replaces attention surgery with background-aware reasoning and test-time adaptation. The first stage, Background-aware Foreground Exclusion (BFE), leverages a multimodal large-language model to separate target foreground, non-target foregrounds, and clean background from a single image-mask pair. The second stage, Background-aware Reconstruction with Subtype Aggregation (BRSA), performs test-time optimization that treats inferred background subtypes as complementary pieces, enforcing their consistent integration through reconstruction and alignment objectives without explicit attention intervention. As a model-agnostic plug-in applicable to diverse diffusion backbones, EraseLoRA reconstructs backgrounds at least 23% more faithful to the original scene than previous dataset-free methods while nearly halving unwanted foreground re-generation, and surpasses all dataset-driven approaches in both aspects despite requiring no training data. Code is available at https://shjo-april.github.io/EraseLoRA.

Text-Conditioned Background Generation for Editable Multi-Layer Documents

We present a framework for document-centric background generation with multi-page editing and thematic continuity. To ensure text regions remain readable, we employ a latent masking formulation that softly attenuates updates in the diffusion space, inspired by smooth barrier functions in physics and numerical optimization. In addition, we introduce Automated Readability Optimization (ARO), which automatically places semi-transparent, rounded backing shapes behind text regions. ARO determines the minimal opacity needed to satisfy perceptual contrast standards (WCAG 2.2) relative to the underlying background, ensuring readability while maintaining aesthetic harmony without human intervention. Multi-page consistency is maintained through a summarization-and-instruction process, where each page is distilled into a compact representation that recursively guides subsequent generations. This design reflects how humans build continuity by retaining prior context, ensuring that visual motifs evolve coherently across an entire document. Our method further treats a document as a structured composition in which text, figures, and backgrounds are preserved or regenerated as separate layers, allowing targeted background editing without compromising readability. Finally, user-provided prompts allow stylistic adjustments in color and texture, balancing automated consistency with flexible customization. Our training-free framework produces visually coherent, text-preserving, and thematically aligned documents, bridging generative modeling with natural design workflows.

RePlan: Reasoning-guided Region Planning for Complex Instruction-based Image Editing

Instruction-based image editing enables natural-language control over visual modifications, yet existing models falter under Instruction-Visual Complexity (IV-Complexity), where intricate instructions meet cluttered or ambiguous scenes. We introduce RePlan (Region-aligned Planning), a plan-then-execute framework that couples a vision-language planner with a diffusion editor. The planner decomposes instructions via step-by-step reasoning and explicitly grounds them to target regions; the editor then applies changes using a training-free attention-region injection mechanism, enabling precise, parallel multi-region edits without iterative inpainting. To strengthen planning, we apply GRPO-based reinforcement learning using 1K instruction-only examples, yielding substantial gains in reasoning fidelity and format reliability. We further present IV-Edit, a benchmark focused on fine-grained grounding and knowledge-intensive edits. Across IV-Complex settings, RePlan consistently outperforms strong baselines trained on far larger datasets, improving regional precision and overall consistency. CHIMERA: Adaptive Cache Injection and Semantic Anchor Prompting for Zero-shot Image Morphing with Morphing-oriented Metrics

Recent diffusion-based image morphing methods typically interpolate inverted latents and reuse limited conditioning signals, which often yields unstable intermediates for heterogeneous endpoint pairs. In particular, (i) feature reuse is usually partial or non-adaptive, leading to abrupt structural changes or over-smoothing, and (ii) text conditions are commonly obtained independently per endpoint and then interpolated, which can introduce incompatible semantics. We present CHIMERA, a novel zero-shot diffusion morphing framework that addresses both issues via inversion-guided denoising with complementary feature reuse and text conditioning. Adaptive Cache Injection (ACI) caches a broader set of multi-scale diffusion features beyond Key-Value-only reuse during DDIM inversion, and re-injects them with layer- and timestep-aware scheduling to stabilize denoising and enable gradual fusion. Semantic Anchor Prompting (SAP) uses a VLM to generate a shared anchor-prompt and anchor-conditioned endpoint prompts, and injects the anchor into cross-attention to improve intermediate semantic coherence. Finally, we propose Global-Local Consistency Score (GLCS), a morphing-oriented metric that jointly captures global domain harmonization and local transition smoothness. Extensive experiments and a user study show that CHIMERA produces smoother and more semantically consistent morphing results than prior methods, while remaining efficient and applicable across diverse diffusion backbones without retraining.

CoatFusion: Controllable Material Coating in Images

We introduce Material Coating, a novel image editing task that simulates applying a thin material layer onto an object while preserving its underlying coarse and fine geometry. Material coating is fundamentally different from existing "material transfer" methods, which are designed to replace an object's intrinsic material, often overwriting fine details. To address this new task, we construct a large-scale synthetic dataset (110K images) of 3D objects with varied, physically-based coatings, named DataCoat110K. We then propose CoatFusion, a novel architecture that enables this task by conditioning a diffusion model on both a 2D albedo texture and granular, PBR-style parametric controls, including roughness, metalness, transmission, and a key thickness parameter. Experiments and user studies show CoatFusion produces realistic, controllable coatings and significantly outperforms existing material editing and transfer methods on this new task.

3D-Consistent Multi-View Editing by Correspondence Guidance

Recent advancements in diffusion and flow models have greatly improved text-based image editing, yet methods that edit images independently often produce geometrically and photometrically inconsistent results across different views of the same scene. Such inconsistencies are particularly problematic for editing of 3D representations such as NeRFs or Gaussian splat models. We propose a training-free guidance framework that enforces multi-view consistency during the image editing process. The key idea is that corresponding points should look similar after editing. To achieve this, we introduce a consistency loss that guides the denoising process toward coherent edits. The framework is flexible and can be combined with widely varying image editing methods, supporting both dense and sparse multi-view editing setups. Experimental results show that our approach significantly improves 3D consistency compared to existing multi-view editing methods. We also show that this increased consistency enables high-quality Gaussian splat editing with sharp details and strong fidelity to user-specified text prompts. Lavida-O: Elastic Large Masked Diffusion Models for Unified Multimodal Understanding and Generation

We propose Lavida-O, a unified Masked Diffusion Model (MDM) for multimodal understanding and generation. Unlike existing multimodal MDMs such as MMaDa and Muddit which only support simple image-level understanding tasks and low-resolution image generation, Lavida-O presents a single framework that enables image-level understanding, object grounding, image editing, and high-resolution (1024px) text-to-image synthesis. Lavida-O incorporates a novel Elastic Mixture-of-Transformers (Elastic-MoT) architecture that couples a lightweight generation branch with a larger understanding branch, supported by token compression, universal text conditioning and stratified sampling for efficient and high-quality generation. Lavida-O further incorporates planning and iterative self-reflection in image generation and editing tasks, seamlessly boosting generation quality with its understanding capabilities. Lavida-O achieves state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of benchmarks including RefCOCO object grounding, GenEval text-to-image generation, and ImgEdit image editing, outperforming existing autoregressive models and continuous diffusion models such as Qwen2.5-VL and FluxKontext-dev, while offering considerable speedup at inference. These advances establish Lavida-O as a new paradigm for scalable multimodal reasoning and generation.

DisCo3D: Distilling Multi-View Consistency for 3D Scene Editing

While diffusion models have demonstrated remarkable progress in 2D image generation and editing, extending these capabilities to 3D editing remains challenging, particularly in maintaining multi-view consistency. Classical approaches typically update 3D representations through iterative refinement based on a single editing view. However, these methods often suffer from slow convergence and blurry artifacts caused by cross-view inconsistencies. Recent methods improve efficiency by propagating 2D editing attention features, yet still exhibit fine-grained inconsistencies and failure modes in complex scenes due to insufficient constraints. To address this, we propose DisCo3D, a novel framework that distills 3D consistency priors into a 2D editor. Our method first fine-tunes a 3D generator using multi-view inputs for scene adaptation, then trains a 2D editor through consistency distillation. The edited multi-view outputs are finally optimized into 3D representations via Gaussian Splatting. Experimental results show DisCo3D achieves stable multi-view consistency and outperforms state-of-the-art methods in editing quality.

Inverse-and-Edit: Simple and Effective Framework for Fast Image Editing

Diffusion-based text-to-image models have recently been distilled into few-step samplers and fast generators, reducing inference cost while maintaining high image quality. However, text-guided editing with such accelerated backbones remains challenging: inversion in a small number of steps is unreliable, local errors accumulate along the trajectory, and existing fast-editing methods typically rely on backbone-specific inversion procedures, which limits their transferability. In this work, we propose a simple and universal framework for text-guided image editing with arbitrary accelerated diffusion and flow-matching models. Instead of optimizing local, per-timestep objectives, we directly minimize a global editing objective over the entire inversion-generation trajectory. The framework fine-tunes only 1.5-7 % of the base-model parameters through two lightweight LoRA adapters (forward and backward), trained on fewer than 10 K triplets from the publicly available HQ-Edit dataset. We validate our method on three architecturally distinct backbones: consistency-distilled SD1.5 LCM-Dreamshaper, adversarial-distilled SDXL-Turbo, and rectified-flow-distilled Z-Image-Turbo. On PIE-Bench, our method achieves the strongest editing alignment within each backbone family while ensuring a strong level of content preservation. Inference adds no extra steps beyond the standard inversion and editing passes. The project page with visual results is available at iliabeletskii.github.io/inverse-and-edit.

Training-Free, Identity-Preserving Image Editing for Fashion Pose Alignment and Normalization

Diffusion models have recently unlocked new possibilities in editing images of real-world objects. Yet, transforming objects in non-rigid ways, such as modifying poses or applying image-based conditioning, continues to present significant challenges. Retaining the unique identity of objects during these edits is a complex task, and current techniques often fall short of delivering the precision needed for industrial settings, where consistency is non-negotiable. Additionally, adapting diffusion models demands custom training data, which is often unavailable in real-world scenarios. To address these gaps, we present FashionRepose, a novel, training-free pipeline designed to handle non-rigid pose adjustments specifically for the fashion industry. This approach combines pretrained off-the-shelf models to modify the poses of long-sleeve garments while safeguarding their identity and branding characteristics. By adopting a zero-shot methodology, FashionRepose enables near real-time edits, entirely eliminating the requirement for specialized training data. FashionRepose has been deployed for a global fashion firm, OVS, handling more than 30,000 long-sleeve garments.

AnyDesign: Versatile Area Fashion Editing via Mask-Free Diffusion

Fashion image editing aims to modify a person's appearance based on a given instruction. Existing methods require auxiliary tools like segmenters and keypoint extractors, lacking a flexible and unified framework. Moreover, these methods are limited in the variety of clothing types they can handle, as most datasets focus on people in clean backgrounds and only include generic garments such as tops, pants, and dresses. These limitations restrict their applicability in real-world scenarios. In this paper, we first extend an existing dataset for human generation to include a wider range of apparel and more complex backgrounds. This extended dataset features people wearing diverse items such as tops, pants, dresses, skirts, headwear, scarves, shoes, socks, and bags. Additionally, we propose AnyDesign, a diffusion-based method that enables mask-free editing on versatile areas. Users can simply input a human image along with a corresponding prompt in either text or image format. Our approach incorporates Fashion DiT, equipped with a Fashion-Guidance Attention (FGA) module designed to fuse explicit apparel types and CLIP-encoded apparel features. Both Qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate that our method delivers high-quality fashion editing and outperforms contemporary text-guided fashion editing methods.

Learn Once, Edit Anywhere: Visual Direction Transfer for Diffusion Models

The rapid advancement of diffusion models has enabled the generation of high-fidelity images from textual prompts, yet achieving precise, disentangled control over specific attributes remains a significant challenge. A fundamental limitation arises because visual differences between images are often far more descriptive and nuanced than what can be captured through human-crafted text descriptions, which frequently fail to convey fine-grained semantic details. To address this, we introduce ViDiT (Visual Direction Transfer for Diffusion), a framework that expands the editing vocabulary by capturing latent semantics directly from image-edit pairs. ViDiT learns the underlying transformation by optimizing a single, global, and continuous editing direction from a small set of before-and-after'' examples. This optimization process transfers visual changes into the diffusion model's conditioning space, allowing for detailed edits that text alone cannot easily describe. ViDiT operates on a Learn Once'' principle, which completely eliminates the need for model fine-tuning or expensive per-image optimization during inference. Once learned, these continuous directions enable ``Edit Anywhere'' capabilities, allowing users to apply highly disentangled manipulations, such as changes in facial features, animal attributes, or artistic styles, to any image in a zero-shot manner with granular control over the edit intensity. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that ViDiT outperforms existing text-based editing methods in maintaining input faithfulness while achieving precise, scalable attribute control.
