Dysarthric Speech Recognition
Overview
Dysarthric speech recognition studies how to transcribe speech whose timing, articulation, and acoustics differ from typical speech, supporting communication and access to speech technology. Common approaches adapt pretrained models such as Whisper or wav2vec models to individual speakers, using fine-tuning or parameter-efficient methods such as LoRA; other work augments scarce training data with acoustic transformations or synthetic speech. Systems are evaluated with word or character error rates on datasets such as TORGO and UA-Speech, often across severity levels and speakers. Personalization can substantially improve accuracy, but collecting enough speaker-specific data while maintaining performance across speakers, conditions, and datasets remains a central challenge.
