Legal NLP
NLP: Natural Language Processing
Overview
Legal NLP uses computational language methods to classify cases, retrieve precedents, extract clauses and entities, summarize documents, and answer legal questions. Common approaches include fine-tuned transformer encoders, domain-adapted language models, large language models with retrieval-augmented generation, and structured or neuro-symbolic methods that represent rules and arguments explicitly. Benchmarks and datasets cover tasks such as judgment prediction, statutory reasoning, contract review, and legal question answering across jurisdictions and languages, often combining automated scores with expert review. A central challenge is making systems reliable beyond familiar data: performance can shift across time, languages, and legal systems, while high benchmark scores do not by themselves establish grounded, legally valid answers or explanations.
