Unsupervised Instantaneous Phase and Frequency Tracking by Inverse Voice Synthesis

Knowledge-driven neural vocoders struggle to learn reliable fundamental frequency end-to-end, because spectral objectives provide weak supervision of periodic structure and lack phase information. We address this with a source-filter model whose alias-free additive source makes the instantaneous phase of the glottal cycle explicit; differentiating it yields the instantaneous frequency, and thus F0F_0, without an external tracker. Waveform error supervises only the deterministic harmonic path, while a spectral loss covers the full signal. On M4Singer and LM-SSD, the reconstruction is phase-aligned, reaching a signal-to-reconstruction-error ratio of 8.1 dB, while neural baselines remain negative. However, GOLF, given an external F0F_0, still reaches lower spectral distortion. On LM-SSD, the recovered F0F_0 attains the highest overall accuracy of any method tested, including supervised neural pitch trackers applied off the shelf, and the glottal closure instants come within 0.53 points of REAPER's identification rate, without any F0F_0 label.

PhaseGAN: High-Fidelity Vocoder via Decoupled Amplitude and GAN-Driven Phase Reconstruction

A vocoder is a pivotal component of modern text-to-speech (TTS) systems. Despite the significant progress of neural network-based vocoders, accurate phase reconstruction remains the main challenge limiting both audio quality and modeling efficiency. We introduce PhaseGAN, a lightweight vocoder that addresses this limitation through a "mel →\rightarrow Amplitude →\rightarrow Phase" reconstruction pipeline. By reconstructing amplitude and phase spectra via distinct methodologies, the proposed PhaseGAN outperforms state-of-the-art baselines while utilizing fewer model parameters and reduced computational requirements. The compact version generates high-fidelity audio with approximately 500K parameters and 1 GMAC computational load, making it highly suitable for real-time applications on edge devices. In addition, our approach exhibits exceptional musical audio synthesis capabilities despite no training on musical data, illustrating unprecedented cross-domain generalization. Multilingual Multi-Speaker Unit Vocoders: A Systematic Analysis of Discrete Speech Representations

Discrete speech units obtained via k-means clustering of self supervised embeddings entangle phonetic, speaker, and language information, causing speaker mixing and cross-lingual interference in multilingual multi-speaker speech generation. Despite growing use in Audio LLMs and speech to speech systems, unit vocoders remain underexplored. We analyze a BigVGAN based unit vocoder, across four Indian languages. We study the interaction between cluster size and conditioning strategies using WER, speaker similarity, and unit level metrics. Results show that cluster size governs intelligibility by improving phonetic discriminability, while explicit speaker conditioning is indispensable for preventing identity collapse. Language supervision yields further gains mainly at lower cluster sizes where units remain ambiguous. Our analysis shows similar phonemes across languages collapse to the same cluster IDs at smaller inventories, with larger clusters progressively separating them.

RAF: Relativistic Adversarial Feedback For Universal Speech Synthesis

We propose Relativistic Adversarial Feedback (RAF), a novel training objective for GAN vocoders that improves in-domain fidelity and generalization to unseen scenarios. Although modern GAN vocoders employ advanced architectures, their training objectives often fail to promote generalizable representations. RAF addresses this problem by leveraging speech self-supervised learning models to assist discriminators in evaluating sample quality, encouraging the generator to learn richer representations. Furthermore, we utilize relativistic pairing for real and fake waveforms to improve the modeling of the training data distribution. Experiments across multiple datasets show consistent gains in both objective and subjective metrics on GAN-based vocoders. Importantly, the RAF-trained BigVGAN-base outperforms the LSGAN-trained BigVGAN in perceptual quality using only 12% of the parameters. Comparative studies further confirm the effectiveness of RAF as a training framework for GAN vocoders.

Toward Complex-Valued Neural Networks for Waveform Generation

Neural vocoders have recently advanced waveform generation, yielding natural and expressive audio. Among these approaches, iSTFT-based vocoders have recently gained attention. They predict a complex-valued spectrogram and then synthesize the waveform via iSTFT, thereby avoiding learned upsampling stages that can increase computational cost. However, current approaches use real-valued networks that process the real and imaginary parts independently. This separation limits their ability to capture the inherent structure of complex spectrograms. We present ComVo, a Complex-valued neural Vocoder whose generator and discriminator use native complex arithmetic. This enables an adversarial training framework that provides structured feedback in complex-valued representations. To guide phase transformations in a structured manner, we introduce phase quantization, which discretizes phase values and regularizes the training process. Finally, we propose a block-matrix computation scheme to improve training efficiency by reducing redundant operations. Experiments demonstrate that ComVo achieves higher synthesis quality than comparable real-valued baselines, and that its block-matrix scheme reduces training time by 25%. Scalable Neural Vocoder from Range-Null Space Decomposition

Although deep neural networks have facilitated significant progress of neural vocoders in recent years, they usually suffer from intrinsic challenges like opaque modeling, inflexible retraining under different input configurations, and parameter-performance trade-off. These inherent hurdles can heavily impede the development of this field. To resolve these problems, in this paper, we propose a novel neural vocoder in the time-frequency (T-F) domain. Specifically, we bridge the connection between the classical range-null decomposition (RND) theory and the vocoder task, where the reconstruction of the target spectrogram is formulated into the superimposition between range-space and null-space. The former aims to project the representation in the original mel-domain into the target linear-scale domain, and the latter can be instantiated via neural networks to further infill the spectral details. To fully leverage the spectrum prior, an elaborate dual-path framework is devised, where the spectrum is hierarchically encoded and decoded, and the cross- and narrow-band modules are leveraged for effectively modeling along sub-band and time dimensions. To enable inference under various configurations, we propose a simple yet effective strategy, which transforms the multi-condition adaption in the inference stage into the data augmentation in the training stage. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on various benchmarks. Quantitative and qualitative results show that while enjoying lightweight network structure and scalable inference paradigm, the proposed framework achieves state-ofthe-art performance among existing advanced methods. Fast and Flexible Audio Bandwidth Extension via Vocos

We propose a Vocos-based bandwidth extension model that enhances audio at 8-48 kHz by generating missing high-frequency content. Inputs are resampled to 48 kHz and processed by a neural vocoder backbone, enabling a single network to support arbitrary upsampling ratios. A lightweight Linkwitz-Riley-inspired refiner merges the original low band with the generated high frequencies via a smooth crossover. On validation, the model achieves competitive log-spectral distance while running at a real-time factor of 0.0001 on an NVIDIA A100 GPU and 0.0053 on an 8-core CPU, demonstrating practical, high-quality BWE at extreme throughput.

SemanticVocoder: Bridging Audio Generation and Audio Understanding via Semantic Latents

Recent audio generation models typically rely on Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) and perform generation within the VAE latent space. Although VAEs excel at compression and reconstruction, their latents inherently encode low-level acoustic details rather than semantically discriminative information, leading to entangled event semantics and complicating the training of generative models. To address these issues, we discard VAE acoustic latents and introduce semantic encoder latents, thereby proposing SemanticVocoder, a generative vocoder that directly synthesizes waveforms from semantic latents. Equipped with SemanticVocoder, our text-to-audio generation model achieves a Frechet Distance of 12.823 and a Frechet Audio Distance of 1.709 on the AudioCaps test set, as the introduced semantic latents exhibit superior discriminability compared to acoustic VAE latents. Beyond improved generation performance, it also serves as a promising attempt towards unifying audio understanding and generation within a shared semantic space. Aliasing-Free Neural Audio Synthesis

In neural audio synthesis, neural vocoders and codecs are models that reconstruct waveforms from acoustic and latent representations, which are essential to the resulting audio quality. While current models are capable of generating perceptually natural speech, they still struggle with high-fidelity music and singing voice synthesis, as severe aliasing artifacts are introduced by non-linear activation functions and upsampling layers in existing architectures. Although various anti-aliasing techniques have been proposed in digital signal processing, their integration into neural vocoders and codecs remains under-explored. This paper incorporates differentiable anti-aliasing techniques into the activation and upsampling modules to bridge this gap, and thus presents Pupu-Vocoder and Pupu-Codec. We build a test signal benchmark to evaluate the anti-aliased modules, and validate our proposed models on speech, singing voice, music, and audio. Experimental results show that Pupu-Vocoder and Pupu-Codec outperform existing systems on singing voice, music, and audio, while achieving comparable performance on speech.
