Quantum Many-Body Physics
Overview
The field investigates how interactions among many electrons, spins, and atoms give rise to properties such as magnetism, superconductivity, entanglement, and phase transitions. Researchers use methods including density-matrix renormalization, quantum Monte Carlo, tensor networks, and neural quantum states, alongside measurements and reduced-density-matrix learning. Common testbeds include Ising and Heisenberg spin models, Hubbard systems, and correlated materials, where methods are compared on energies, correlations, phase boundaries, and dynamics. A central challenge is making calculations scale while keeping them reliable: sign problems, sampling and optimization failures, and limited ways to certify predictions can undermine otherwise expressive models.
