Abstract

Advanced autonomous systems rely on multi-sensor fusion for safer and more robust perception. To enable effective fusion, calibrating directly from natural driving scenes (i.e., target-free) with high accuracy is crucial for precise multi-sensor alignment. Existing learning-based calibration methods are typically designed for only a single pair of sensor modalities (i.e., a bi-modal setup). Unlike these methods, we propose LiREC-Net, a target-free, learning-based calibration network that jointly calibrates multiple sensor modality pairs, including LiDAR, RGB, and event data, within a unified framework. To reduce redundant computation and improve efficiency, we introduce a shared LiDAR representation that leverages features from both its 3D nature and projected depth map, ensuring better consistency across modalities. Trained and evaluated on established datasets, such as KITTI and DSEC, our LiREC-Net achieves competitive performance to bi-modal models and sets a new strong baseline for the tri-modal use case.

CalibBEV: LiDAR-Camera Calibration via BEV Alignment

We present CalibBEV, a novel Bird's Eye View (BEV) alignment approach for LiDAR-camera calibration. Our method unifies LiDAR and camera data into a shared 3D spatial representation, enabling accurate and robust cross-modal calibration. CalibBEV extracts sensor-wise BEV features from each modality using domain-specific architectures and estimates the calibration matrix through a two-step alignment process. First, we perform an implicit alignment by regressing a coarse calibration matrix directly from the BEV features. To ease this alignment, we enforce semantic consistency between BEV representations across modalities using a contrastive loss inspired by CLIP, guiding both networks toward a unified feature space. In the second step, we leverage our BEV formulation to explicitly align the features of one modality with the other, refining the initial coarse estimate into a final, more accurate calibration matrix. CalibBEV significantly outperforms prior point-to-pixel matching methods, achieving state-of-the-art calibration accuracy. On the KITTI and nuScenes benchmarks, our method reduces the Relative Rotation Error (RRE) by 51% and 68%, and the Relative Translation Error (RTE) by 80% and 91%, respectively, compared to previous methods.

CLRNet: Targetless Extrinsic Calibration for Camera, Lidar and 4D Radar Using Deep Learning

In this paper, we address extrinsic calibration for camera, lidar, and 4D radar sensors. Accurate extrinsic calibration of radar remains a challenge due to the sparsity of its data. We propose CLRNet, a novel, multi-modal end-to-end deep learning (DL) calibration network capable of addressing joint camera-lidar-radar calibration, or pairwise calibration between any two of these sensors. We incorporate equirectangular projection, camera-based depth image prediction, additional radar channels, and leverage lidar with a shared feature space and loop closure loss. In extensive experiments using the View-of-Delft and Dual-Radar datasets, we demonstrate superior calibration accuracy compared to existing state-of-the-art methods, reducing both median translational and rotational calibration errors by at least 50%. Finally, we examine the domain transfer capabilities of the proposed network and baselines, when evaluating across datasets. Native-Domain Cross-Attention for Camera-LiDAR Extrinsic Calibration Under Large Initial Perturbations

Accurate camera-LiDAR fusion relies on precise extrinsic calibration, which fundamentally depends on establishing reliable cross-modal correspondences under potentially large misalignments. Existing learning-based methods typically project LiDAR points into depth maps for feature fusion, which distorts 3D geometry and degrades performance when the extrinsic initialization is far from the ground truth. To address this issue, we propose an extrinsic-aware cross-attention framework that directly aligns image patches and LiDAR point groups in their native domains. The proposed attention mechanism explicitly injects extrinsic parameter hypotheses into the correspondence modeling process, enabling geometry-consistent cross-modal interaction without relying on projected 2D depth maps. Extensive experiments on the KITTI and nuScenes benchmarks demonstrate that our method consistently outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in both accuracy and robustness. Under large extrinsic perturbations, our approach achieves accurate calibration in 88% of KITTI cases and 99% of nuScenes cases, substantially surpassing the second-best baseline.
