Abstract

Integer sequences in the OEIS span values from single-digit constants to astronomical factorials and exponentials, making prediction challenging for standard tokenised models that cannot handle out-of-vocabulary values or exploit periodic arithmetic structure. We present IntSeqBERT, a dual-stream Transformer encoder for masked integer-sequence modelling on OEIS. Each sequence element is encoded along two complementary axes: a continuous log-scale magnitude embedding and sin/cos modulo embeddings for 100 residues (moduli 22--101101), fused via FiLM. Three prediction heads (magnitude regression, sign classification, and modulo prediction for 100 moduli) are trained jointly on 274,705 OEIS sequences. At the Large scale (91.5M parameters), IntSeqBERT achieves 95.85% magnitude accuracy and 50.38% Mean Modulo Accuracy (MMA) on the test set, outperforming a standard tokenised Transformer baseline by +8.9+8.9 pt and +4.5+4.5 pt, respectively. An ablation removing the modulo stream confirms it accounts for +15.2+15.2 pt of the MMA gain and contributes an additional +6.2+6.2 pt to magnitude accuracy. A probabilistic Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT)-based Solver converts the model's predictions into concrete integers, yielding a 7.4-fold improvement in next-term prediction over the tokenised-Transformer baseline (Top-1: 19.09% vs. 2.59%). Modulo spectrum analysis reveals a strong negative correlation between Normalised Information Gain (NIG) and Euler's totient ratio φ(m)/m\varphi(m)/m (r=−0.851r = -0.851, p<10−28p < 10^{-28}), providing empirical evidence that composite moduli capture OEIS arithmetic structure more efficiently via CRT aggregation.

Testing Transformer Learnability on the Arithmetic Sequence of Rooted Trees

We study whether a transformer network can learn the deterministic sequence of trees generated by the iterated prime factorization of the natural numbers. Each integer is mapped into a rooted planar tree and the resulting sequence NT\mathbb{N}\mathscr{T} defines an arithmetic text with measurable statistical structure. A transformer network (the GPT-2 architecture) is trained from scratch on the first 101110^{11} elements and evaluated on next-token prediction and masked-token prediction tasks, with a Hidden Markov Model as baseline and a scaling analysis over context window, dataset size, vocabulary size and model size. The model reaches a word accuracy of about 0.40.4, well above the baseline, and its performance remains stable on test blocks located at 101310^{13}-101510^{15}, far beyond the training interval. Moreover, the likelihood assigned by the trained model separates the arithmetic text from two controls: synthetic token sequences that preserve the marginal token frequencies but not their order, with a separation that widens with the context, and sequences containing more than three consecutive square-free integers, a configuration that arithmetic forbids. These results indicate that the transformer captures regularities of the arithmetic text that go beyond its frequency profile.

Where Induction Runs Out: Description-Length Difficulty and the Memorisation Gap in Integer-Sequence Benchmarks

Integer sequences from the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) are increasingly used to benchmark mathematical reasoning in language models. We ask what such benchmarks actually measure, using an exactly computable reference learner: two-part minimum description length (MDL) over the class of P-recursive (holonomic) recurrences, evaluated on every prefix of a sequence as terms arrive. Three findings follow. First, MDL difficulty is a parameter count. The discovery point nd, the first prefix length at which a symbolic hypothesis beats verbatim storage, is predicted almost exactly by a combinatorial identifiability bound on the selected operator's order and degree. It is invariant to term magnitude: scaling Fibonacci over twelve orders of magnitude leaves nd unchanged, because a hypothesis must encode its own initial conditions and the magnitude cancels. Second, at scale the learner exhibits a regime our curated corpus could not produce even once: across 20,000 OEIS sequences, 89.98% of those that fit a recurrence on some prefix fit none at full length. We call this the wilderness -- induction acquires a theory, loses it, and never recovers. Third, evaluating three language models on sequences stratified by these MDL regimes refuted our pre-registered hypothesis: models do not confabulate where MDL reports no theory, but hedge appropriately. Confident errors are inverted, concentrating on the easy stratum, where apparent competence tracks recognition of the sequence rather than induction of its rule. OEIS-derived benchmarks therefore substantially measure memorisation, and MDL supplies a cheap, contamination-free difficulty signal they currently lack. Code and data are released.

LANTERN: Illuminating Hidden Mathematical Knowledge in Language Models

Language models can now prove theorems, but people still decide which problems to pursue. We ask whether a model's internal representations can help identify promising mathematical connections. We develop LANTERN, a fast, cost-efficient pipeline that uses a classifier over pretrained-model activations to rank candidate relations, followed by staged filtering, hypothesis generation, executable verification, and analytical checking. Applied to the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS), LANTERN ranked 50 million pairs among 10,000 frequently referenced sequences and produced 62 verified relations between pairs without an existing OEIS cross-reference. A content screen retained 13 relations worth presenting; nine of these are informative or insightful, including four which are entirely novel to the best of our knowledge: none appears in the OEIS or in our targeted literature search. The entire end-to-end process including classifier training, candidate ranking, filtering and verification took under 8 hours.
