Abstract

Unified multimodal models hold the promise of generating extensive, interleaved narratives, weaving text and imagery into coherent long-form stories. However, current systems suffer from a critical reliability gap: as sequences grow, generation quality rapidly collapses. In this work, we investigate the mechanism behind this failure and argue that it is distinct from standard long-context challenges. We reveal that in generation, accumulated visual history acts as a source of active pollution, a decay governed specifically by the number of image events rather than raw token count. We identify a structural vulnerability where dense visual tokens overwhelm the attention mechanism, creating noise that distorts future synthesis. Guided by these mechanistic insights, we propose UniLongGen, a training-free inference strategy that prioritizes safe conditioning over total recall. Instead of retaining all history, UniLongGen dynamically curates the model's memory, identifying and discarding interfering visual signals based on the model's own internal relevance rankings. Extensive experiments demonstrate that this active forgetting approach is essential for stability: UniLongGen significantly outperforms baselines in long-horizon fidelity and consistency, while simultaneously reducing memory footprint and inference time.

Scaling Unified Multimodal Models to Long-Horizon Interleaved Generation

Unified multimodal models (UMMs) provide an interface for interleaved text-image generation, where generated visual states can directly inform subsequent reasoning and synthesis. However, existing systems are still primarily demonstrated on short trajectories or simplified visual content. We develop a large UMM natively trained on interleaved multimodal data, with strong capabilities in image synthesis, text rendering, complex composition, and multimodal planning, and study how to extend these native capabilities to substantially longer autoregressive trajectories. The main challenge is that generated images continuously accumulate in context: irrelevant or imperfect visual states interfere with future synthesis, while previously established characters and scenes must still be recovered after long intervals. We introduce a visual-memory framework that maintains persistent visual references, selectively retrieves scene-relevant historical states while preserving the complete semantic history, and uses few-step self-rollout to adapt the model to imperfect generated histories. We further introduce LongMIG-Bench for evaluating long-horizon text-to-multi-image and image-to-multi-image generation. Our model achieves high-fidelity long-horizon interleaved generation with strong character and scene consistency, demonstrating how visual memory can scale native interleaved generation to substantially longer trajectories.

Images in Sentences: Scaling Interleaved Instructions for Unified Visual Generation

While recent advancements in multimodal language models have enabled image generation from expressive multi-image instructions, existing methods struggle to maintain performance under complex interleaved instructions. This limitation stems from the structural separation of images and text in current paradigms, which forces models to bridge difficult long-range dependencies to match descriptions with visual targets. To address these challenges, we propose Images iN SEnTences (a.k.a, INSET), a unified generation model that seamlessly embeds images as native vocabulary within textual instructions. By positioning visual features directly at their corresponding semantic slots, INSET leverages the contextual locality of transformers for precise object binding, effectively treating images as dense, expressive language tokens. Furthermore, we introduce a scalable data engine that synthesizes 15M high-quality interleaved samples from standard image and video datasets, utilizing VLMs and LLMs to construct rich, long-horizon sequences. Evaluation results on InterleaveBench demonstrate that INSET significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in multi-image consistency and text alignment, with performance gaps widening as input complexity increases. Beyond standard generation, our approach inherently extends to multimodal image editing, integrating visual content as part of the instruction to facilitate highly expressive and creative visual manipulations.

Wan-Weaver: Interleaved Multi-modal Generation via Decoupled Training

Recent unified models have made unprecedented progress in both understanding and generation. However, while most of them accept multi-modal inputs, they typically produce only single-modality outputs. This challenge of producing interleaved content is mainly due to training data scarcity and the difficulty of modeling long-range cross-modal context. To address this issue, we decompose interleaved generation into textual planning and visual consistency modeling, and introduce a framework consisting of a planner and a visualizer. The planner produces dense textual descriptions for visual content, while the visualizer synthesizes images accordingly. Under this guidance, we construct large-scale textual-proxy interleaved data (where visual content is represented in text) to train the planner, and curate reference-guided image data to train the visualizer. These designs give rise to Wan-Weaver, which exhibits emergent interleaved generation ability with long-range textual coherence and visual consistency. Meanwhile, the integration of diverse understanding and generation data into planner training enables Wan-Weaver to achieve robust task reasoning and generation proficiency. To assess the model's capability in interleaved generation, we further construct a benchmark that spans a wide range of use cases across multiple dimensions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that, even without access to any real interleaved data, Wan-Weaver achieves superior performance over existing methods.
