Abstract

As wireless communication evolves, each generation of networks brings new technologies that change how we connect and interact. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming crucial in shaping the future of sixth-generation (6G) networks. By combining AI and Machine Learning (ML), 6G aims to offer high data rates, low latency, and extensive connectivity for applications including smart cities, autonomous systems, holographic telepresence, and the tactile internet. This paper provides a detailed overview of the role of AI in supporting 6G networks. It focuses on key technologies like deep learning, reinforcement learning, federated learning, and explainable AI. It also looks at how AI integrates with essential network functions and discusses challenges related to scalability, security, and energy efficiency, along with new solutions. Additionally, this work highlights perspectives that connect AI-driven analytics to 6G service domains like Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC), Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Massive Machine-Type Communication (mMTC), and Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC). It addresses concerns about standardization, ethics, and sustainability. By summarizing recent research trends and identifying future directions, this survey offers a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners at the intersection of AI and next-generation wireless communication.

Towards Resilient and Autonomous Networks: A BlueSky Vision on AI-Native 6G

The proliferation of emerging applications, such as autonomous driving and immersive experiences, demands cellular networks that are not only faster, but fundamentally more resilient and autonomous. This paper presents a BlueSky vision on how Artificial Intelligence will be natively integrated into 6G, shifting the paradigm from Network for AI to AI for Network. We envision that, unlike 5G's reliance on scattered, ad-hoc models each trained for a single task, native AI in the 6G era will be anchored by a foundation model and and orchestrated via collaborative multi-agent systems, framing network management as a unified, multi-modal, multi-task optimization problem. Built on this vision, we outline two transformative directions. The first focuses on developing a 6G foundation model as a unified backbone, with task-specific knowledge distilled into compact models suited for diverse edge deployments. The second advances multi-agent systems designed to autonomously diagnose, maintain, and recover networks with minimal human intervention. These directions chart a roadmap for 6G to evolve into an intelligent, self-sustaining communication infrastructure.

Generative Communications: Overview, Technologies, and Trends

The groundbreaking development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly boosting the ability to generate content such as images and videos, reshaping communication paradigms. This article introduces generative communications (GenCom), a novel paradigm for 6G networks in which large AI models (LAMs) drive semantic understanding, reasoning, and content generation, embedding these into the communication process. Unlike traditional systems that strictly pursue accurate bit transmission, GenCom enables transmitters to convey only minimal yet sufficient information, while receivers leverage shared generative priors and knowledge bases to synthesize the intended output. Communication is thus redefined as controlled generation rather than data reproduction. We formalize the concept of GenCom, clarify its AI-native and generation-driven properties, and present its core mechanisms. A two-layer GenCom architecture supported by key enabling technologies is proposed, and analysis of four representative application scenarios demonstrates that GenCom offers ultra-efficient transmission, semantic-level robustness, and new network functions. Finally, we outline future research directions, including foundational theory and real-time processing, highlighting a promising pathway toward 6G networks.

LLM-Powered Agentic AI for 5G/6G Networks: A Tutorial and Survey on Architectures, Protocols, and Standardization

Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI), enabled by Large Language Models, marks a shift from rule-based automation toward autonomous, goal-driven control of Next-Generation Networks (NGNs). Existing surveys treat the two domains in isolation, leaving protocol integration, evaluation, and standardization alignment underexplored. To address this gap, a two-part tutorial-and-survey is presented. Part I formalises the control, management, and AI-native planes of 5G and 6G. It then covers the foundations of agentic systems: reasoning, planning, tool use, multi-agent coordination, and evaluation. Part II maps agentic capabilities onto 5G/6G control surfaces, standardization, and major 6G initiatives. Finally, it identifies open challenges shaping autonomous telecommunications.
