Composer Vector: Style-steering Symbolic Music Generation in a Latent Space

Authors: Xunyi Jiang, Mingyang Yao, Jingyue Huang, Julian McAuley

Abstract

Symbolic music generation has made significant progress, yet achieving fine-grained and flexible control over composer style remains challenging. Existing training-based methods for composer style conditioning depend on large labeled datasets. Besides, these methods typically support only single-composer generation at a time, limiting their applicability to more creative or blended scenarios. In this work, we propose Composer Vector, an inference-time steering method that operates directly in the model's latent space to control composer style without retraining. Through experiments on multiple symbolic music generation models, we show that Composer Vector effectively guides generations toward target composer styles, enabling smooth and interpretable control through a continuous steering coefficient. It also enables seamless fusion of multiple styles within a unified latent space framework. Overall, our work demonstrates that simple latent space steering provides a practical and general mechanism for controllable symbolic music generation, enabling more flexible and interactive creative workflows. Diff-Symbo: Text-Controlled Long-Duration Symbolic Music Generation Using Autoregressive Latent Diffusion Model

Text-controlled symbolic music generation has recently gained research attention due to its versatile, flexible and straightforward approach to music composition. However, previous approaches tend to generate symbolic music with compromising quality, diversity, controllability and limited duration. In this paper, we present Diff-Symbo, an innovative method that uses latent diffusion model (LDM) to generate high-quality, diverse and long-duration symbolic music. To address the lack of text-symbolic music dataset, we develop a comprehensive dataset with 19,345 text templates by employing large language model. Furthermore, we design a music information encoder to reduce the training overhead while extracting more effective control representations. Given textual descriptions, our proposed method leverages LDM to improve the quality and diversity of music generation. Our method also improves the duration and the compositional consistency of music generation through an autoregressive approach. Experimental results show significant improvements of Diff-Symbo in text controllability, duration, and the quality of generated music compared to the baseline models such as GPT-4, MuseCoco and Multitrack Music Transformer (MMT). As one of the pioneer models in this field, Diff-Symbo paves the way towards controllable and high-quality symbolic music composition based on LDM, offering valuable contributions to both music amateurs and practitioners.

Getting Motif-ated: Controllable AI Compositions from Injected Motif Prompts

Deep learning has transformed symbolic music generation by borrowing the training paradigms of large language models, with systems such as NotaGen now producing complete, stylistically convincing classical scores from a short prompt. These systems could become powerful creative partners, helping musicians generate endless possibilities. However, current systems expose almost no control handles on the music itself. In principle, control handles could be built into a foundation model trained from scratch, but this is rarely practical without massive amounts of quality annotated data and compute resources. We therefore present MotiGen, a recipe for retrofitting pretrained symbolic music models to use new instruction prompts. MotiGen injects a musical motif as a structured prompt line, reinforces it with a scalar attention bias toward the motif tokens, and learns the association with a two-phase curriculum. First, it learns from focused excerpts cropped around motif occurrences in the training data, then full scores including the motifs. Our experiments show that our model composes with the prompted motif in over 92.3% of generated pieces. Generated pieces using a variety of motifs are included in our sample site: https://motigen-site.github.io/.

Generative Modeling of Bach-Style Symbolic Music: A Comparative Study of Autoregressive, Latent-Variable, and Adversarial Approaches

We study generative modeling of Bach-style symbolic piano music using a shared MIDI corpus and three model families: autoregressive LSTMs with attention, latent-variable models including recurrent VAEs and vector-quantized VAEs, and generative adversarial networks. We compare their ability to model polyphonic note sequences, learn useful latent representations, and generate stylistically coherent compositions. Our experiments show that the autoregressive LSTM with attention produces the most musically coherent samples, while vector quantization helps mitigate posterior collapse and yields more structured outputs than conventional recurrent VAEs. The adversarial approach captures local pitch patterns but remains difficult to train and generalizes less reliably to Bach's style. These results highlight the relative strengths and failure modes of autoregressive, latent-variable, and adversarial approaches for symbolic music generation.
