Abstract

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a key enabler technology for data collection from Internet of Things (IoT) devices. However, effective data collection is challenged by resource constraints and the need for real-time decision-making. In this work, we propose a novel framework that integrates semantic communication with UAV command-and-control (C&C) to enable efficient image data collection from IoT devices. Each device uses Deep Joint Source-Channel Coding (DeepJSCC) to generate a compact semantic latent representation of its image to enable image reconstruction even under partial transmission. A base station (BS) controls the UAV's trajectory by transmitting acceleration commands. The objective is to maximize the average quality of reconstructed images by maintaining proximity to each device for a sufficient duration within a fixed time horizon. To address the challenging trade-off and account for delayed C&C signals, we model the problem as a Markov Decision Process and propose a Double Deep Q-Learning (DDQN)-based adaptive flight policy. Simulation results show that our approach outperforms baseline methods such as greedy and traveling salesman algorithms, in both device coverage and semantic reconstruction quality.

TRUAV: Distributed Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Trajectory Planning and Routing Enhancement in UAV-Aided IoT-Enabled VANETs

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a key enabler of next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems, offering flexible aerial relaying to extend connectivity across dynamic vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) in smart city environments. However, conventional centralized approaches for UAV trajectory planning require continuous global network state aggregation, making them impractical under bandwidth and energy constraints typical of dense urban deployments. In this article, we present TRUAV, a distributed multi-agent reinforcement learning framework based on independent tabular Q-learning for joint UAV trajectory planning and routing enhancement in UAV-aided VANETs. Each UAV is equipped with a local Q-learning agent that operates purely on locally observable information, including vehicle density, packet queue states, and neighbor UAV positions, thereby eliminating the need for global state exchange. A potential-game-inspired reward design encourages spatial diversity and routing-aware UAV positioning among interacting agents while accounting for energy consumption. Numerical simulations over a large urban area with 200 mobile vehicles show that the proposed TRUAV framework achieves network coverage and packet delivery ratios comparable to centralized deep reinforcement learning methods, while also improving relay delay and energy efficiency. Finally, we discuss emerging challenges and future research directions for distributed multi-agent UAV-assisted IoT systems.

Joint Optimization of Trajectory Control, Resource Allocation, and Task Offloading for Multi-UAV-Assisted IoV

This paper investigates a multi-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) joint base station-assisted Internet of Vehicles (IoV) task offloading system in dense urban environments. To minimize system delay and energy consumption under strict coupling constraints, the complex non-convex optimization problem is decoupled into a hierarchical execution framework. First, a sequential distributed optimization algorithm based on Second-Order Cone Programming (SOCP) is proposed to optimize the 3D flight trajectory of each UAV, ensuring adaptive network coverage. Second, a novel hybrid resource scheduling paradigm synergizing Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) and Large Language Models (LLMs) is developed. Within this framework, the DRL agent dictates the initial resource allocation, while the LLM acts as a semantic macro-scheduler to rectify long-tail allocation imbalances for failed and surplus tasks. Crucially, a reward decoupling mechanism is introduced to isolate DRL training from external LLM interventions, thereby ensuring policy convergence. Finally, the task offloading ratios are precisely determined via Linear Programming (LP) within an alternating optimization loop. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms traditional multi-agent reinforcement learning baselines in terms of task success rate and system efficiency.

Doubly Adaptive Channel and Spatial Attention for Semantic Image Communication by IoT Devices

Internet of Things (IoT) networks face significant challenges such as limited communication bandwidth, constrained computational and energy resources, and highly dynamic wireless channel conditions. Utilization of deep neural networks (DNNs) combined with semantic communication has emerged as a promising paradigm to address these limitations. Deep joint source-channel coding (DJSCC) has recently been proposed to enable semantic communication of images. Building upon the original DJSCC formulation, low-complexity attention-style architectures has been added to the DNNs for further performance enhancement. As a main hurdle, training these DNNs separately for various signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) will amount to excessive storage or communication overhead, which can not be maintained by small IoT devices. SNR Adaptive DJSCC (ADJSCC), has been proposed to train the DNNs once but feed the current SNR as part of the data to the channel-wise attention mechanism. We improve upon ADJSCC by a simultaneous utilization of doubly adaptive channel-wise and spatial attention modules at both transmitter and receiver. These modules dynamically adjust to varying channel conditions and spatial feature importance, enabling robust and efficient feature extraction and semantic information recovery. Simulation results corroborate that our proposed doubly adaptive DJSCC (DA-DJSCC) significantly improves upon ADJSCC in several performance criteria, while incurring a mild increase in complexity. These facts render DA-DJSCC a desirable choice for semantic communication in performance demanding but low-complexity IoT networks.
