Channel Attention
Overview
Channel attention studies how neural networks assign different importance to feature channels, often to suppress noise or preserve task-specific information. Common designs such as squeeze-and-excitation and efficient channel attention derive gates from pooled features, while newer variants use spatial or region-aware pooling, prompts, decoder context, or separate channel and spatial updates. These mechanisms are tested in image classification and fine-grained recognition, medical and general segmentation, detection, point-cloud analysis, and multimodal tasks, typically against attention-free and spatial-attention baselines. A central tension is whether more adaptive channel weighting improves transfer and difficult cases enough to justify added complexity, and whether reported gains hold under leakage-resistant evaluation.
