Abstract

Many robot planning tasks require satisfaction of one or more constraints throughout the entire trajectory. For geometric constraints, manifold-constrained motion planning algorithms are capable of planning collision-free path between start and goal configurations on the constraint submanifolds specified by task. Current state-of-the-art methods can take tens of seconds to solve these tasks for complex systems such as humanoid robots, making real-world use impractical, especially in dynamic settings. Inspired by recent advances in hardware accelerated motion planning, we present a CPU SIMD-accelerated manifold-constrained motion planner that revisits projection-based constraint satisfaction through the lens of parallelization. By transforming relevant components into parallelizable structures, we use SIMD parallelism to plan constraint satisfying solutions. Our approach achieves up to 100-1000x speed-ups over the state-of-the-art, making real-time constrained motion planning feasible for the first time. We demonstrate our planner on a real humanoid robot and show real-time whole-body quasi-static plan generation. Our work is available at https://commalab.org/papers/mcvamp/.

PATACON: GPU-Parallel Tangent-Bundle RRT-Connect for Constrained Motion Planning

Fast whole-body motion planning enables continuous replanning for humanoid robots in dynamic environments while satisfying collision avoidance and kinematic constraints. However, constrained motion planning incurs substantial computational cost due to repeated constraint projection in addition to collision checking and nearest-neighbor search. Recently, GPU-based massively parallel planners have been proposed to reduce computational cost. Nevertheless, these planners still steer in the ambient configuration space, so projecting candidates that deviate from the manifold remains a significant source of overhead, particularly in highly constrained, high-dimensional problems. In this work, we introduce PATACON, a GPU-parallel bidirectional planner that explores tangent space to exploit the local manifold geometry induced by known constraint functions. Experiments on dual-arm closed-chain and humanoid whole-body constrained planning tasks show that PATACON outperforms the prior work as configuration-space dimension and constraint codimension grow, achieving up to an 11.25 times speedup. These results suggest that GPU-parallel tangent-space exploration brings constrained whole-body motion planning closer to real-time performance.

ReVAMP: Vector-Accelerated Motion Planning for Kinematically-Constrained Systems via Reparameterization

Robots often must satisfy one or more constraints during motion planning for real-world tasks. When such constraints reduce the valid configuration space to a measure-zero subset, sampling based planning algorithms require modifications to draw feasible samples. For many common end-effector constraints, parameterizations built on inverse kinematics (IK) provide an alternate formulation where the constraints are satisfied by construction, allowing directly sampling the feasible set. Despite their elegant approach, parameterized planners have remained slower than vector-accelerated implementations of projection-based approaches, leaving their performance ceiling an open question. We explore a new axis of vectorization built upon reparameterizing the planning space through analytic IK. This approach addresses existing inefficiencies in vectorized projection-based planners and exposes new opportunities for parallelism within the planner. We show that the planner can synthesize plans in microseconds to milliseconds for high dimensional systems (up to 20 dimensions), with complex constraints, up to 10x faster than the current state-of-the-art. Furthermore, we demonstrate how such planning speeds open up avenues for restructuring sequential manipulation pipelines.

VAMP-MR: Vector-Accelerated Motion Planning and Execution for Multi-Robot-Arms

Multi-robot-arm motion planning is a key challenge in deploying multiple manipulators for industrial tasks such as manufacturing. Existing search-based and sampling-based solvers often require significant computation time to produce collision-free, high-quality motions suitable for safe real-world execution. In this work, we introduce a new suite of multi-robot-arm motion planners capable of near real-time motion generation, combining classical planning algorithms with state-of-the-art vectorized collision-checking techniques. Based on CPU SIMD instructions, our new planners accelerate their primary bottleneck, collision checking, and achieve up to two orders of magnitude speedup in both motion planning and execution postprocessing for multi-arm manipulation tasks. We also release our implementation to lower the barrier for research and development of multi-robot-arm planning and manipulation problems. Code is available at https://vamp-mr.github.io/vamp-mr
