Abstract

Rapid urbanization and continuous population growth have made municipal solid waste management increasingly challenging. These challenges highlight the need for smarter and automated waste management solutions. This paper presents the design and evaluation of an integrated waste management framework that combines two connected systems, a robotic waste segregation module and an optimized bio-digestor. The robotic waste segregation system uses a MyCobot 280 Jetson Nano robotic arm along with YOLOv8 object detection and robot operating system (ROS)-based path planning to identify and sort waste in real time. It classifies waste into four different categories with high precision, reducing the need for manual intervention. After segregation, the biodegradable waste is transferred to a bio-digestor system equipped with multiple sensors. These sensors continuously monitor key parameters, including temperature, pH, pressure, and motor revolutions per minute. The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, combined with a regression model, is used to dynamically adjust system parameters. This intelligent optimization approach ensures stable operation and maximizes digestion efficiency under varying environmental conditions. System testing under dynamic conditions demonstrates a sorting accuracy of 98% along with highly efficient biological conversion. The proposed framework offers a scalable, intelligent, and practical solution for modern waste management, making it suitable for both residential and industrial applications.

ROBOCYCLE: Autonomous Dual-Arm Robotic Manipulation and Coordination for Recycling Applications

As urban waste volumes escalate and labor shortages intensify, automated waste sorting systems are becoming a necessity. However, current robotic solutions often struggle with the 3D perception and manipulation of transparent, deformable, or cluttered objects. This work introduces ROBOCYCLE, an autonomous dual-arm robotic recycling platform designed to meet the recycling standards of the Tokyo metropolitan area. Our approach integrates multi-view RGB-D perception, transformer-based instance segmentation using RF-DETR, and 6-DoF grasp planning via the Anygrasp SDK. By processing segmentated point clouds, the system generates robust candidate poses for irregular and deformable waste. The system achieved a 90.3% grasp success rate and 84.3% overall task success rate, effectively performing complex coordinated tasks such as unscrewing PET bottle caps. The proposed platform offers a scalable solution for autonomous waste management in real-world human environments.

WasteAssistant: Regulation-Guided Visual Question Answering Framework for Intelligent Waste Segregation and Sustainable Managemen

Efficient waste segregation is critical for sustainable urban management and environmental governance. Existing automated systems are limited by single-modality visual processing, insufficient contextual understanding, and weak regulatory alignment. To address these issues, we propose a language-guided vision-AI framework that integrates vision-language models and multimodal large language models for joint visual-linguistic reasoning. This framework implements a visual question answering paradigm aligned with India's Solid Waste Management Rules 2016. We construct a new WasteVQA dataset with 13,500 question-answer pairs across 21 waste categories. Experiments show that the BLIP-based model achieves a BLEU score of 0.8291 and a BERTScore of 0.9273, outperforming traditional CNN-based methods. This work improves source-level segregation accuracy, ensures regulatory compliance, and supports scalable deployment for municipal and citizen-facing waste management, promoting multimodal AI in sustainable urban infrastructure. Towards Effective Waste Segmentation for Automated Waste Recycling in Cluttered Background

Rapid expansion of urban areas and population growth is causing an immense increase in waste production, which demands the need for efficient and automated waste management. In this scenario, automated waste recycling (AWR) using deep learning methods can assist humans in optimal waste management. Recent deep learning approaches for AWR provide promising waste segmentation performance, however, these methods rely on large backbone networks that are inefficient for AWR systems and suffer from performance deterioration in cluttered scenes. To this end, an optimal waste segmentation network is introduced which effectively utilizes the spatial domain to capture localized structural dependencies and the spectral domain to efficiently extract global contextual relationships. This cascaded design allows the network to progressively leverage both local and global representations across complementary domains to highlight the semantic information necessary for effective segmentation of various waste objects. Furthermore, auxiliary feature enhancement module (AFEM) is introduced to enhance the target objects' boundaries and blob amplification for better segmentation in cluttered scenarios. Extensive experimentation on ZeroWaste-aug, ZeroWaste-f and SpectralWaste datasets reveals the merits of the proposed method.
