Abstract

Poisoning input views of 3D reconstruction systems has been recently studied. However, we identify that existing studies simply backpropagate adversarial gradients through the 3D reconstruction pipeline as a whole, without uncovering the new vulnerability rooted in specific modules of the 3D reconstruction pipeline. In this paper, we argue that the structure-from-motion (SfM) initialization, as the geometric core of many widely used reconstruction systems, can be targeted to achieve transferable poisoning effects across diverse 3D reconstruction systems. To this end, we propose PoInit-of-View, which optimizes adversarial perturbations to intentionally introduce cross-view gradient inconsistencies at projections of corresponding 3D points. These inconsistencies disrupt keypoint detection and feature matching, thereby corrupting pose estimation and triangulation within SfM, eventually resulting in low-quality rendered views. We also provide a theoretical analysis that connects cross-view inconsistency to correspondence collapse. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our PoInit-of-View on diverse 3D reconstruction systems and datasets, surpassing the single-view baseline by 25.1% in PSNR and 16.5% in SSIM in black-box transfer settings, such as 3DGS to NeRF.

When Wider Views Fail: Stress-Testing Feed-Forward 3D Reconstruction

Feed-forward 3D reconstruction models enable efficient geometry estimation from sparse images, but their pretrained nature can make them vulnerable to distribution shifts beyond their training data. Identifying these failure modes is important for understanding when such models can be reliably deployed in unconstrained imaging settings. We investigate viewpoint variation as a controlled distribution shift by varying the angular span of sparse image inputs while keeping the input budget fixed. Across multiple feed-forward reconstruction models, we observe substantial degradation as viewpoint span increases, with wide spans producing both incomplete surface coverage and geometry unsupported by the observed imagery. These results reveal that viewpoint variation can induce failure modes beyond conventional reconstruction incompleteness, highlighting the need to evaluate pretrained feed-forward models under distribution shifts that challenge their learned geometric priors.

Déjà View: Looping Transformers for Multi-View 3D Reconstruction

Recent feed-forward 3D reconstruction transformers have scaled to over a billion parameters, following the broader trend of increasing model capacity in computer vision. Yet emerging evidence suggests that contiguous transformer layers often behave like repeated applications of similar operations, and multi-view reconstruction transformers refine their predictions progressively across decoder depth. We posit that model depth partially buys iteration, paid for inefficiently in unique parameters, and instead make that iteration explicit in architecture. Our model, DéjàView, applies a single looped transformer block recurrently to per-view features for K refinement steps. Trained once, it exposes K as an inference-time compute knob, matching or outperforming substantially larger feed-forward baselines across five reconstruction benchmarks spanning indoor, outdoor, object-centric, and driving scenes, while using a fraction of their parameters and comparable or lower compute. Importantly, the same looped block formulation outperforms an otherwise identical variant with independent per-step parameters under matched training data and compute, suggesting that explicit iteration is not merely a compute-efficient substitute for capacity but a stronger inductive bias for multi-view 3D reconstruction.

PanoImager: Geometry-Guided Novel View Synthesis and Reconstruction from Sparse Panoramic Views

Panoramic sensing offers wide field-of-view coverage, yet 3D reconstruction from sparse panoramas remains challenging under rotation-dominant, weak-parallax motion. In such regimes, SfM/SLAM initialization is often ill-conditioned and unreliable. We present PanoImager, an SfM-free framework that combines feed-forward pose/depth priors, geometry-conditioned diffusion view completion, and depth-guided 3DGS optimization. Given only a few panoramic images, PanoImager decomposes them into local perspective views, synthesizes auxiliary observations to enrich sparse evidence, and stabilizes Gaussian optimization for improved cross-view consistency. Experiments on multiple benchmarks show improved stability under extreme sparsity, suggesting PanoImager as an offline/background component for map refinement when SfM/SLAM fails to initialize.
