Migrant Voices, Local News: Insights on Bridging Community Needs with Media Content

Abstract

Research shows news consumption differs across demographics, yet little is known about non-mainstream audiences, especially in relation to local media. Our study addresses this gap by examining how French-speaking migrants in a mid-size European city engage with local news, and whether their needs are reflected in coverage. Eight community members participated in focus groups, whose insights guided the selection of natural language processing methods (topic modeling, information retrieval, sentiment analysis, and readability) applied to over 2000 hyper-local news articles. Results showed that while articles frequently covered local events, gaps remained in topics important to participants. Sentiment analysis revealed a generally positive tone, and readability measures indicated an intermediate-advanced French level, raising questions about accessibility for integration. Our work contributes to bridging the gap between local news platforms' content and diverse readers' needs, and could inform local media organizations about opportunities to expand their current news story coverage to appeal to more diverse audiences.

BOUTEF: A Multilingual Corpus for FakeNews in North Africa -- Language as a Weapon

The rapid spread of fake news on social media has become a major challenge, particularly in multilingual and under-resourced contexts such as North Africa. In this paper, we introduce BOUTEF, a large-scale multilingual corpus designed to study the propagation, characteristics, and impact of fake news in Algeria and Tunisia. The corpus integrates three complementary components: fake narratives, genuine narratives, and associated user-generated comments, along with verified debunking information. It covers a wide range of languages and linguistic varieties, including MSA, Algerian and Tunisian dialects, Arabizi, French, English, and code-switched language. Building on this resource, we conduct a comprehensive empirical analysis combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. We examine thematic distributions, linguistic and rhetorical strategies, sentiment patterns, and social engagement dynamics. Statistical analyses reveal significant associations between thematic categories and message veracity, as well as strong correlations between user engagement and the visibility of fake content. Our findings show that fake news relies heavily on emotionally charged narratives, sensational framing, and hybrid linguistic practices that enhance virality and audience engagement. In contrast, debunking content adopts a more factual and verification-oriented style. Furthermore, a comparative analysis between Algeria and Tunisia highlights both shared dynamics and country-specific characteristics shaped by sociopolitical contexts. The results emphasize the role of informal language practices in the diffusion and reception of misinformation. By providing a rich, annotated, and publicly available dataset, this work contributes to advancing research on fake news detection, low-resource language processing, and the understanding of information disorders in complex linguistic environments.

Detecting Experiential Intertextuality Across Migration Routes: Beyond Surface Similarity in French Narratives

Migrants traversing geographically distinct routes such as the Trans-Saharan and Balkan corridors often recount strikingly parallel lived experiences: police violence, smuggler exploitation, dangerous crossings, and family separation. We introduce the task of experiential intertextuality detection: automatically identifying shared experiential echoes across migration narratives without requiring annotated training data. From 108 French migration narratives spanning both corridors, we automatically generate sentence pairs and score them using annotation-free methods: lexical baselines, sentence embeddings, POS-based structural features, a migration-specific theme lexicon, context-aware narrative features, and zero-shot LLM scoring with Qwen2.5-7B and Mistral-7B under three prompting strategies. We validate all methods against 816 expert-annotated intertextuality judgments (inter-annotator Krippendorff's α=0.27α= 0.27). Our results reveal that all surface, structural, and embedding methods correlate only weakly with expert judgments (r0.30r \leq 0.30); Qwen2.5-7B zero-shot achieves the best single-method correlation (r=0.38r = 0.38); few-shot examples degrade Qwen but dramatically improve Mistral; narrative position significantly predicts intertextuality, with departure-phase pairs showing the highest experiential echoes; and a supervised hybrid combining all 31 features achieves r=0.45r = 0.45, a 21% improvement over the best individual method.

Infini-News: Efficiently Queryable Access to 1.3 Billion Processed Common Crawl News Articles

Large-scale news corpora support a wide range of research in Computational Social Science and NLP, yet access remains constrained: commercial archives impose prohibitive costs and licensing restrictions, while open alternatives like Common Crawl's CC-News require terabyte-scale storage and computationally intensive processing. We present Infini-News, a retrieval toolkit and index for the entire CC-News archive from August 2016 to the latest available snapshot. Our contributions are threefold. First, we extract, clean the text, and parse the structured metadata of over 1.35B articles. Second, we enrich the corpus with language detection using three frontier language classifiers (GlotLID, lingua, and CommonLingua), and with multi-source geographic attribution that resolves a country of origin for 83.4% of articles across 222 countries. Third, we construct Infini-gram indexes: suffix-array structures that let researchers search the full archive for arbitrary text patterns in sub-second time. Together, these resources lower the barrier to longitudinal, cross-national media research.
