SELF-EMO: Emotional Self-Evolution from Recognition to Consistent Expression

Abstract

Emotion Recognition in Conversation (ERC) has become a fundamental capability for large language models (LLMs) in human-centric interaction. Beyond accurate recognition, coherent emotional expression is also crucial, yet both are limited by the scarcity and static nature of high-quality annotated data. In this work, we propose SELF-EMO, a self-evolution framework grounded in the hypothesis that better emotion prediction leads to more consistent emotional responses. We introduce two auxiliary tasks, emotional understanding and emotional expression, and design a role-based self-play paradigm where the model acts as both an emotion recognizer and a dialogue responder. Through iterative interactions, the model generates diverse conversational trajectories, enabling scalable data generation. To ensure quality, we adopt a data flywheel mechanism that filters candidate predictions and responses using a smoothed IoU-based reward and feeds selected samples back for continuous self-improvement without external supervision. We further develop SELF-GRPO, a reinforcement learning algorithm that stabilizes optimization with multi-label alignment rewards and group-level consistency signals. Experiments on IEMOCAP, MELD, and EmoryNLP show that SELF-EMO achieves state-of-the-art performance, improving accuracy by +6.33% on Qwen3-4B and +8.54% on Qwen3-8B, demonstrating strong effectiveness and generalization.

Dual-Loop Self-Evolution via Verifiable Emotion Feedback for Multi-Turn Empathetic Dialogue

Large language models have demonstrated conversational capabilities, yet empathetic competence remains challenging. Empathetic support is inherently multi-turn and path-dependent: users disclose concerns gradually, emotions evolve over time, and early responses shape trust and receptivity. Reinforcement learning with verifiable emotion rewards provides scalable supervision for long-horizon interactions. However, existing methods evolve the dialogue policy while keeping its training interaction distribution fixed, creating a mismatch between policy competence and training experience. We introduce a dual-loop self-evolution framework driven by verifiable emotion feedback. With the user simulator and verifier frozen, the inner loop optimizes the multi-turn policy using continuous emotion rewards, while the outer loop uses the same outcomes to estimate policy-relative interaction utility and adapt experience. To obtain estimates from sparse, stochastic rollouts, the framework holds the scenario and interaction state constant within each group and prioritizes conditions whose group pass rates lie near the policy's competence boundary. A hierarchical controller shares evidence across support intents, while uncertainty-guided exploration and uniform rehearsal prevent premature exclusion. The resulting distribution generates trajectories, closing both loops without increasing the rollout budget. On SAGE, our framework raises Qwen3-8B Overall from 53.87 to 79.24 and outperforms protocol-matched uniform emotion-reward reinforcement learning by 7.23 points.

Self-EmoQ: Plutchik-Guided Value-based Planning to Drive Streaming Emotional TTS

Emotional interaction is increasingly crucial for conversational AI, yet current systems lack a self-emotion determination mechanism to drive the streaming text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis. We propose an emotion-planning framework that determines the emotion prior to the textual generation, grounding the downstream emotional TTS in a streaming manner. The framework is implemented by a plug-and-play LLM module, initialized from pretrained LLMs, and trained by reinforcement learning (RL) with emotions as the actions. A hybrid reward is employed which combines imitation signals with theory-driven scoring, in which the theory of Plutchik's wheel of emotions is adopted. By experiments on DailyDialog, EmoryNLP, IMEOCAP, and MELD, our method outperforms prompting and finetuning baselines on both emotion determination and response quality. We finally implement an entire streaming pipeline for real-time deployment, with the speech quality confirming the framework's emotional alignment, contextual coherence, and expressive fluency. ER-EDF: A Psychology-Grounded Emotion Regulation Framework for Speech Empathetic Dialogue Generation in Large Audio-Language Models

Empathetic response generation in spoken dialogue systems requires both accurate emotion perception and appropriate emotion regulation. Grounded in psychological theories such as the Perception-Action Model and emotion regulation theory, effective empathy depends not only on inferring a user's affective state but also on regulating how it is expressed in responses. However, recent large audio-language models (LALMs) largely treat emotion as a direct conditioning signal, lacking explicit regulatory mechanisms, which often leads to affect mirroring rather than calibrated support. We propose ER-EDF, a psychology-grounded framework that explicitly decouples emotion perception and emotion regulation in LALMs. Perception tracks the user's emotional state, while regulation determines how this state should guide empathetic response generation. The framework is model-agnostic and integrates seamlessly into existing LALMs. We further construct a spoken empathetic dialogue dataset and introduce empathy-aware evaluation metrics beyond lexical matching. Experiments across five LALMs and two datasets show that ER-EDF consistently improves empathetic response quality in both automatic and human evaluations, highlighting the importance of jointly modeling emotion perception and regulation in spoken empathetic dialogue systems, paving a new direction for psychologically grounded empathetic AI.
