Multilingual and Domain-Agnostic Tip-of-the-Tongue Query Generation for Simulated Evaluation

Abstract
Tip-of-the-Tongue (ToT) retrieval benchmarks have largely focused on English, limiting their applicability to multilingual information access. In this work, we construct multilingual ToT test collections for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and English, using an LLM-based query simulation framework. We systematically study how prompt language and source document language affect the fidelity of simulated ToT queries, validating synthetic queries through system rank correlation against real user queries. Our results show that effective ToT simulation requires language-aware design choices: non-English language sources are generally important, while English Wikipedia can be beneficial when non-English sources provide insufficient information for query generation. Based on these findings, we release four ToT test collections with 5,000 queries per language across multiple domains. This work provides the first large-scale multilingual ToT benchmark and offers practical guidance for constructing realistic ToT datasets beyond English.
Multilingual fluency often invites a stronger assumption: a model that can speak a user's language must also understand the culture encoded by that language. We call this the Illusion of Cultural Alignment. To test this assumption directly, we introduce MSQA, a benchmark of 1,064 natively sourced questions across 11 language groups, five cultural dimensions, and three difficulty tiers. Unlike translated benchmarks, MSQA targets locally grounded knowledge and reduces shortcuts from English-centric cross-lingual transfer. Evaluating 18 LLMs, we find substantial cultural degradation and a pronounced Locality Effect: cultural competence tracks pre-training exposure more closely than general reasoning ability. We further show that common inference-time remedies do not dissolve the illusion. Models remain overconfident on unfamiliar cultural questions, repeated sampling yields unstable rather than reliable correctness, and retrieval augmentation helps unevenly on long-tail facts. These findings indicate that cultural alignment cannot be inferred from multilingual ability alone and requires deeper intervention than calibration, sampling, or retrieval at inference time
Large Language Models (LLMs) are now widely used for query reformulation and expansion in Information Retrieval, with many studies reporting substantial effectiveness gains. However, these results are typically obtained under heterogeneous experimental conditions, making it difficult to assess which findings are reproducible and which depend on specific implementation choices. In this work, we present a systematic reproducibility and comparative study of ten representative LLM-based query reformulation methods under a unified and strictly controlled experimental framework. We evaluate methods across two architectural LLM families at two parameter scales, three retrieval paradigms (lexical, learned sparse, and dense), and nine benchmark datasets spanning TREC Deep Learning and BEIR. Our results show that reformulation gains are strongly conditioned on the retrieval paradigm, that improvements observed under lexical retrieval do not consistently transfer to neural retrievers, and that larger LLMs do not uniformly yield better downstream performance. These findings clarify the stability and limits of reported gains in prior work. To enable transparent replication and ongoing comparison, we release all prompts, configurations, evaluation scripts, and run files through QueryGym, an open-source reformulation toolkit with a public leaderboard.\footnote{https://leaderboard.querygym.com}
Knowledge-intensive multi-hop question answering requires systems to select evidence and compose dependent facts, yet multilingual benchmarks usually translate an entire example into one language. This hides failures at language boundaries inside the reasoning chain. We introduce XHotpotQA, a controlled benchmark for cross-lingual knowledge composition over mixed-language evidence. Each instance is modeled as an evidence-dependency graph whose question, bridge evidence, answer-bearing evidence, and distractors have explicit language assignments. The audited resource contains 15,661 training and 7,405 validation instances, with sentence-level support supervision and supplied distractors. In validation, 99.81% of items cross the question-to-gold-evidence language interface and 95.60% use gold paragraphs in different languages. Across three reader artifacts, full question-evidence mismatch is associated with 10.25 to 15.79 lower Unicode-aware answer F1 than partial alignment, and different-script evidence with deficits of 11.98 to 23.70 points; the corresponding adapted-selector contrasts are 1.71 and 1.78 points. Under this supplied-candidate design, the evaluated readers therefore show substantially larger condition-associated deficits than the selector. XHotpotQA provides role-aware diagnostics, modular evaluation, and an audited test bed for knowledge-based systems that must integrate evidence across languages.
