Abstract

Fine-grained local timing control is still absent from modern text-to-speech systems: existing approaches typically provide only utterance-level duration or global speaking-rate control, while precise token-level timing manipulation remains unavailable. To the best of our knowledge, MAGIC-TTS is the first TTS model with explicit local timing control over token-level content duration and pause. MAGIC-TTS is enabled by explicit token-level duration conditioning, carefully prepared high-confidence duration supervision, and training mechanisms that correct zero-value bias and make the model robust to missing local controls. On our timing-control benchmark, MAGIC-TTS substantially improves token-level duration and pause following over spontaneous synthesis. Even when no timing control is provided, MAGIC-TTS maintains natural high-quality synthesis. We further evaluate practical local editing with a scenario-based benchmark covering navigation guidance, guided reading, and accessibility-oriented code reading. In this setting, MAGIC-TTS realizes a reproducible uniform-timing baseline and then moves the edited regions toward the requested local targets with low mean bias. These results show that explicit fine-grained controllability can be implemented effectively in a high-quality TTS system and can support realistic local timing-editing applications.

Post-Training Zero-Shot TTS for Fine-Grained Emotion and Duration Control via Natural Language

Audiobook narration, conversational agents, and audiovisual dubbing require speech that conveys changing emotions and adapts its pacing within a single utterance. But most existing TTS systems typically rely on utterance-level style conditioning, making such fine-grained control difficult to achieve. In light of this, and inspired by the success of post-training in large language models, we propose a unified post-training framework that equips pretrained text-to-speech models with natural-language control over segment-level emotion and duration. Supervised fine-tuning establishes instruction-conditioned speech generation, while reinforcement learning with group relative policy optimization refines control accuracy using emotion and duration rewards alongside content and speaker preservation objectives. By reusing the pretrained architecture, our approach avoids additional inference-time control modules. Experiments demonstrate significantly improved fine-grained controllability while maintaining speech intelligibility and speaker identity, highlighting post-training as a practical approach to extending existing speech synthesis models.

dots.tts.edit: Precisely Controlled Speech Editing with a Continuous Autoregressive Model

Speech editing for content creation requires precise control over both what an edit should do and where it should apply. Free-form natural language provides a flexible interface for expressing edit requests, but its ambiguity may leave the intended operation, parameters, or target region underspecified. We study a precise and explicit interface for speech editing: a transcript-grounded structural edit instruction with XML-style tags explicitly specifies typed operations and localizes them to transcript spans or boundaries. This semantic timeline avoids explicit timestamp alignment and provides an externally inspectable contract for compositional edits. We instantiate the interface in dots..tts..edit, an editor adapted from the continuous autoregressive dots..tts foundation model. Four representative speech-creation controls cover lexical content, affective expression, pitch and speaking-rate delivery, and temporal phrasing through text, emotion, prosody, and pause editing. Task-specific data pipelines construct operation- and scope-controlled pairs while retaining source-derived context outside each target region. We further introduce doteBench, a bilingual evaluation suite that measures precise instruction following, local preservation, and audio quality across the four controls and their composition. Experiments show leading overall instruction following and local preservation across its five editing categories, while audio quality remains comparable to existing open-source systems. Across three Seed-TTS-Eval shards, the model shows negligible differences from the base model in zero-shot TTS recognition error rate and speaker similarity.

MagpieTTS-LF: Inference-Time Long-Form Speech Generation Without Training on Long-Form data

Neural Text-to-Speech (TTS) systems achieve remarkable quality on short utterances but long-form speech generation shows prosodic drift, speaker inconsistencies and sentence boundary artifacts. Existing approaches either compress sequences, increase context length or naively concatenate independently synthesized chunks. We present an inference-time approach called MagpieTTS-LF that enables MagpieTTS to produce coherent long-form speech without model retraining. Our method introduces three key innovations: (1) soft attention priors to guide monotonic alignment while preserving past and future context; (2) a stateful inference algorithm that maintains context across sentence chunks, ensuring prosodic continuity; (3) history-aware text encoding that uses past text for discourse-level prosodic planning. Experiments on long texts show significant improvements in long-range intelligibility, prosodic coherence, speaker consistency, and boundary naturalness compared to other baselines.
