PriorNet: Prior-Guided Engagement Estimation from Face Video

Authors: Alexander Vedernikov

Abstract

Engagement estimation from face video remains challenging because facial evidence is often incomplete, labeled data are limited, and engagement annotations are subjective. We present PriorNet, a prior-guided framework that injects task-relevant priors at three stages of the pipeline: preprocessing, model adaptation, and objective design. PriorNet converts face-detection failures into explicit zero-frame placeholders so that missing-face events remain represented in the input sequence, adapts a frozen Self-supervised Video Facial Affect Perceiver (SVFAP) backbone through a Prior-guided Low-Rank Adaptation module (Prior-LoRA) for parameter-efficient specialization, and trains with a Dirichlet-evidential, uncertainty-weighted objective under hard-label supervision. We evaluate PriorNet on EngageNet, DAiSEE, DREAMS, and PAFE using each dataset's native evaluation protocol. Across these benchmarks, PriorNet improves over the strongest listed prior reference within each dataset's evaluation framing, while component ablations on EngageNet and DAiSEE indicate that the gains arise from complementary contributions of preprocessing, adaptation, and objective-level priors. These results support explicit prior injection as a useful design principle for face-video engagement estimation under the benchmark conditions studied in this work.

Learning a Delighting Prior for Facial Appearance Capture in the Wild

High-quality facial appearance capture has traditionally required costly studio recording. Recent works consider an in-the-wild smartphone-based setup; however, their model-based inverse rendering paradigm struggles with the complex disentanglement of reflectance from unknown illumination. To bridge this gap, we propose to shift the paradigm into training a powerful delighting network as a prior to constrain the optimization. We leverage the OLAT dataset and the rendered Light Stage scans for training, and propose Dataset Latent Modulation (DLM) to seamlessly integrate these heterogeneous data sources. Specifically, by conditioning the core network on learnable source-aware tokens, we decouple dataset-specific styles from physical delighting principles, enabling the emergence of a delighting prior that outperforms existing proprietary models. This powerful delighting prior enables a simple and automatic appearance capture pipeline that achieves high-quality reflectance estimation from casual video inputs, outperforming prior arts by a large margin. Furthermore, we leverage our appearance capture method to transform the multi-view NeRSemble dataset into NeRSemble-Scan, a large-scale collection of 4K-resolution relightable scans. By open-sourcing our model and the NeRSemble-Scan dataset, we democratize high-end facial capture and provide a new foundation for the research community to build photorealistic digital humans.

DVFace: Spatio-Temporal Dual-Prior Diffusion for Video Face Restoration

Video face restoration aims to enhance degraded face videos into high-quality results with realistic facial details, stable identity, and temporal coherence. Recent diffusion-based methods have brought strong generative priors to restoration and enabled more realistic detail synthesis. However, existing approaches for face videos still rely heavily on generic diffusion priors and multi-step sampling, which limit both facial adaptation and inference efficiency. These limitations motivate the use of one-step diffusion for video face restoration, yet achieving faithful facial recovery alongside temporally stable outputs remains challenging. In this paper, we propose, DVFace, a one-step diffusion framework for real-world video face restoration. Specifically, we introduce a spatio-temporal dual-codebook design to extract complementary spatial and temporal facial priors from degraded videos. We further propose an asymmetric spatio-temporal fusion module to inject these priors into the diffusion backbone according to their distinct roles. Evaluation on various benchmarks shows that DVFace delivers superior restoration quality, temporal consistency, and identity preservation compared to recent methods. Test-Time Adaptation with Online Personalized Energy-Based Cache for Fine-Grained Video Expression Recognition

Facial expression recognition (FER) in videos is challenging because models must identify subtle, temporally evolving affective states that vary across individuals. Although vision-language models provide transferable visual-semantic representations, models trained on subject-independent data often degrade under subject-specific distribution shifts at inference time. Existing test-time adaptation (TTA) methods commonly update model parameters during inference, increasing computational cost and latency. Cache-based methods avoid parameter updates, but they usually require enough target samples to form reliable class prototypes, which is difficult early in adaptation and for rarely observed classes. We introduce Energy-Based Cache Personalization (EB-CaP), a subject-based online TTA method for video FER that generates class-specific prototypes personalized to each target video. EB-CaP uses a lightweight energy-based model to sample prototypes from the current unlabeled video and populate a personalized cache online, without accumulating large amounts of target data or storing diverse source prototypes. Its energy function relies only on pretrained CLIP: similarities between the target video embedding and class text embeddings guide prototype sampling. In parallel, positive and negative caches store reliable and uncertain target embeddings. An adaptive entropy gate controls cache updates according to the evolving confidence distribution, while a diversity gate limits redundant samples. Final predictions combine cache-derived scores with the current CLIP scores. Experiments on BioVid, StressID, and BAH show that EB-CaP outperforms state-of-the-art TTA methods while maintaining low computational and memory overhead.
