Abstract

Assertion-based Verification (ABV) is essential for ensuring that hardware designs conform to their intended specifications. However, existing automated assertion-generation approaches, such as LLM-based frameworks, often generate large numbers of redundant assertions, which significantly degrade simulation efficiency. To mitigate the simulation overhead caused by redundant assertions, this paper proposes Arcane, an efficient assertion reduction framework. It integrates a two-tier assertion clustering approach for accurate semantic classification of large assertion sets, and employs Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to explore optimal rule-application sequences for efficient assertion reduction. The experimental results on Assertionbench [20] show that Arcane achieves a reduction of up to 76.2% in the assertion count while fully preserving formal coverage and mutation-detection ability. Further simulation studies demonstrate a speedup of 2.6x to 6.1x speedup in simulation time. The proposed framework is released at https://anonymous.4open.science/r/Arcane1-0A6F/.

AssertLLM2: A Comprehensive LLM Benchmark for Assertion Generation from Design Specifications

Assertion-based verification (ABV) is a cornerstone of modern hardware design, yet manually translating design intent into formal SystemVerilog Assertions (SVAs) remains labor-intensive and error-prone. While Large Language Models (LLMs) show promise for automating this process, existing benchmarks remain limited by unrealistic task formulations, weak specification inputs, and oversimplified evaluation. To address these limitations, we introduce AssertLLM2, an open-source benchmark for realistic assertion generation in hardware verification. AssertLLM2 contains 83 real-world designs across 13 functional categories. For each design, the benchmark provides a structured design specification, a verified dependency-complete golden RTL, and systematically mutated buggy RTL variants. These support two practical settings: bug-prevention, where assertions are generated from specifications to guard against design errors, and bug-hunting, where assertions are generated to expose discrepancies between intended behavior and faulty implementations. To the best of our knowledge, AssertLLM2 is the first benchmark to explicitly use buggy RTL as input to evaluate bug-detection capability. AssertLLM2 further adopts a more rigorous evaluation framework spanning syntactic validity, formal provability, coverage, and mutation-based bug detection. Our benchmark enables a more realistic and extensive assessment of assertion generation and establishes rigorous baselines for state-of-the-art LLMs in practical hardware verification.

SpecAlign: A Semantic Alignment Framework for SystemVerilog Assertion Generation

Existing Large Language Model (LLM) approaches to SystemVerilog Assertion (SVA) generation primarily focus on syntactic validity and formal verification outcomes, while semantic alignment between generated assertions and natural language specifications remains difficult to quantify. As a result, hallucinated or misaligned SVAs can reduce confidence and increase debugging efforts in the absence of golden RTL. This paper presents SpecAlign, a framework for semantic evaluation and refinement of LLM-generated SVAs. SpecAlign introduces two iterative alignment loops that assess both natural language properties and SVAs against the design specification using entailment-based classification. We improve alignment decisions by generating multiple reasoning paths using chain-of-thought prompting and aggregating them via a self-consistency voting mechanism. Misaligned assertions are analyzed to generate actionable feedback for refinement. We further define a quantitative alignment score to measure semantic consistency across iterations. Experimental results demonstrate that SpecAlign effectively detects semantic inconsistencies and improves assertion alignment without relying on golden RTL, providing a scalable complement to traditional formal verification evaluation metrics.

HierSVA: A Data Synthesis Pipeline, Dataset, and Benchmark for LLM-Driven Hierarchical Hardware Formal Verification

We present HierSVA, an integrated suite that combines a pipeline, dataset, and benchmark for LLM-driven hierarchical hardware formal verification. HierSVA-SP pairs an RTL preprocessing toolchain with an LLM-in-the-loop formal verification flow to produce reference SystemVerilog Assertions (SVA) on hierarchical RTL. Applying it to BaseJump STL yields HierSVA-DS, a dataset of 342 modules, with hierarchy metadata and depths 0--9, accompanied by a deep subset of 28 module-bug pairs with natural-language specifications and bug variants. HierSVA-B decomposes assertion quality into six metric axes: syntax correctness, assertion proof success rate, vacuity, specification faithfulness, mutation coverage, and formal core coverage. Applying HierSVA-B to twelve recent LLMs reveals three findings. First, the module-level compile rate is 67.1%; among generated assertions in evaluable runs, 82.1% prove non-vacuously, but the corresponding assertion sets detect only 70.2% of eligible injected faults and cover 36.2% of the formal core. Second, on 211 evaluable model--module entries in the deep subset, assertion sets flag buggy RTL with 0.87 recall, but 40% of predicted-buggy outcomes are false positives on correct RTL, limiting precision to 0.60. Third, agentic mode improves S1-style provability and strength metrics, but gains plateau and oscillate.
