3DEditSafe: Defending 3D Editing Pipelines from Unsafe Generation

Authors: Nicole MengZheyuan LiuMeng JiangYingjie Lao

Abstract

Recent advances in 3D generative editing, particularly pipelines based on 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), have achieved high-fidelity, multi-view-consistent scene manipulation from text prompts. However, we find that these pipelines also introduce new safety risks when unsafe prompts produce edits that are propagated and optimized across views. In this work, we study unsafe generation in 3D editing pipelines and show that such behavior can lead to coherent, undesirable Not-Safe-For-Work (NSFW) content in the final 3D representation. To address this, we propose 3DEditSafe, a safety-regularized 3D editing framework that constrains unsafe semantic propagation during optimization. 3DEditSafe combines generation-stage safety guidance with rendered-view 3D safety regularization, safe semantic projection, residue suppression, and mask-aware preservation to steer optimization away from unsafe editing directions. We evaluate our approach on EditSplat scenes using an object-compatible unsafe prompt benchmark and show that 2D safety guidance alone is not consistently sufficient to prevent unsafe 3D edits. 3DEditSafe reduces unsafe semantic alignment and view-level attack success rates, while revealing a safety-quality tradeoff in which stronger unsafe suppression can introduce artifacts or reduce unsafe-prompt fidelity. To our knowledge, this work is the first attempt to study and defend against unsafe generation in text-driven 3D editing pipelines, highlighting the need for safety mechanisms that operate directly on optimized 3D representations.

Beyond Prompts: Unconditional 3D Inversion for Out-of-Distribution Shapes

Text-driven inversion of generative models is a core paradigm for manipulating 2D or 3D content, unlocking numerous applications such as text-based editing, style transfer, or inverse problems. However, it relies on the assumption that generative models remain sensitive to natural language prompts. We demonstrate that for state-of-the-art native text-to-3D generative models, this assumption often collapses. We identify a critical failure mode where generation trajectories are drawn into latent ``sink traps'': regions where the model becomes insensitive to prompt modifications. In these regimes, changes to the input text fail to alter internal representations in a way that alters the output geometry. Crucially, we observe that this is not a limitation of the model's \textit{geometric} expressivity; the same generative models possess the ability to produce a vast diversity of shapes but, as we demonstrate, become insensitive to out-of-distribution \textit{text} guidance. We investigate this behavior by analyzing the sampling trajectories of the generative model, and find that complex geometries can still be represented and produced by leveraging the model's unconditional generative prior. This leads to a more robust framework for text-based 3D shape editing that bypasses latent sinks by decoupling a model's geometric representation power from its linguistic sensitivity. Our approach addresses the limitations of current 3D pipelines and enables high-fidelity semantic manipulation of out-of-distribution 3D shapes. What Makes a 3D Scene Editable? A Factorized Benchmark of Fidelity, Locality, Consistency, and Preservation

Neural 3D scene editing is often evaluated by semantic alignment alone, although a convincing result may alter unrelated content or become inconsistent across views. We introduce EditBench3D, a representation-agnostic benchmark that treats editing as controlled information replacement. It evaluates four complementary properties: instruction fidelity, spatial locality, cross-view consistency, and preservation of non-target content. The protocol combines visibility-aware 3D target supports, paired descriptions, held-out cameras, and five edit families covering appearance, material, geometry, and object-level changes. We evaluate eight representative NeRF, 3D Gaussian Splatting, hybrid, and proxy-based editors on 240 scene-edit pairs. The study shows that semantic fidelity is only weakly associated with the other editing properties, and that no single method is optimal across all dimensions. Explicit Gaussian editors offer a strong overall balance, whereas direct proxy manipulation provides the most conservative edits at the cost of open-ended fidelity. These findings support reporting editability as a multi-objective profile rather than a single semantic score.

Native3D: End-to-End 3D Scene Generation via Unified Mesh-Texture Modeling and Semantic Alignment

This paper presents Native3D, the first end-to-end 3D scene generation framework that completely bypasses 2D intermediate representations. Traditional approaches typically require adapting 3D representations to the 2D domain to leverage pre-trained diffusion models, which inevitably introduces domain adaptation issues including geometric structural distortion and texture detail degradation. To address these limitations, we design a unified mesh-texture joint representation that simultaneously models both geometric structures and texture features through a Transformer-based scene encoder, effectively maintaining spatial relationships and visual consistency among objects within scenes. We further propose the 3D Representation Alignment Loss (3D REPA Loss), which employs an improved contrastive learning mechanism to align multi-level semantic representations in the latent space, significantly enhancing geometric and textural fidelity. Experimental results demonstrate that Native3D outperforms existing methods in both generation quality and editing flexibility, providing a novel solution for 3D scene editing.
