FTibSuite: A Comprehensive Resource Suite for Tibetan Vision-Language Modeling

Abstract

Vision-language models have progressed rapidly, but Tibetan remains a severely underserved low-resource language due to the lack of reproducible training and evaluation infrastructure. To fill this gap, we introduce FTibSuite, a comprehensive resource suite for Tibetan vision-language research, consisting of FTibData (human-verified multimodal training corpora spanning continual pretraining, image-text alignment, and instruction tuning data), FTibBench (Tibetan adaptations of five mainstream multimodal benchmarks with a hierarchical quality-control workflow to reduce translation noise), and FTibVLM, a reproducible baseline built on Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct via a three-stage adaptation pipeline. Experiments on FTibBench show FTibVLM delivers consistent performance gains across all tasks, such as improving MMBench accuracy from 42.97 to 67.78 and POPE-random accuracy from 47.53 to 80.56, while retaining the backbone's original Chinese capabilities with minimal degradation, providing the first standardized foundation for Tibetan multimodal research.

Multilingual Training and Evaluation Resources for Vision-Language Models

Vision Language Models (VLMs) achieved rapid progress in the recent years. However, despite their growth, VLMs development is heavily grounded on English, leading to two main limitations: (i) the lack of multilingual and multimodal datasets for training, and (ii) the scarcity of comprehensive evaluation benchmarks across languages. In this work, we address these gaps by introducing a new comprehensive suite of resources for VLMs training and evaluation spanning five European languages (English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish). We adopt a regeneration-translation paradigm that produces high-quality cross-lingual resources by combining curated synthetic generation and manual annotation. Specifically, we build Multi-PixMo, a training corpus obtained regenerating examples from Pixmo pre-existing datasets with permissively licensed models: PixMo-Cap, PixMo-AskModelAnything, and CoSyn-400k. On the evaluation side, we construct a set of multilingual benchmarks derived translating widely used English datasets (MMbench, ScienceQA, MME, POPE, AI2D). We assess the quality of these resources through qualitative and quantitative human analyses, measuring inter-annotator agreement. Additionally, we perform ablation studies to demonstrate the impact of multilingual data, with respect to English only, in VLMs training. Experiments, comprising 3 different models show that using multilingual, multimodal examples for training VLMs aids is consistently beneficial on non-English benchmarks, with positive transfer to English as well.

Tibetan-TTS:Low-Resource Tibetan Speech Synthesis with Large Model Adaptation

Tibetan text-to-speech (TTS) has long been challenged by scarce speech resources, significant dialectal variation, and the complex mapping between written text and spoken pronunciation. To address these issues, this work presents, to the best of our knowledge, the first large-model-based Tibetan TTS system in the industry, built upon a large speech synthesis model developed by Xingchen AGI Lab. The proposed system integrates data quality enhancement, Tibetan-oriented text representation and tokenizer adaptation, and cross-lingual adaptive training for low-resource Tibetan speech synthesis. Experimental results show that the system can generate stable, natural, and intelligible Tibetan speech under low-resource conditions. In subjective evaluation, the MOS scores of the syllable-level and BPE-based systems reach 4.28 and 4.35, while their pronunciation accuracies reach 97.6% and 96.6%, respectively, outperforming an external commercial Tibetan TTS interface. These results demonstrate that combining a large-model backbone with Tibetan-oriented text representation adaptation and cross-lingual adaptive training enables highly usable low-resource Tibetan speech synthesis, and also provides a technical foundation for future unified multi-dialect Tibetan speech synthesis.

Parameter Efficient Multimodal Instruction Tuning for Romanian Vision Language Models

Focusing on low-resource languages is an essential step toward democratizing generative AI. In this work, we contribute to reducing the multimodal NLP resource gap for Romanian. We translate the widely known Flickr30K dataset into Romanian and further extend it for visual question answering by leveraging open-source LLMs. We demonstrate the usefulness of our datasets by fine-tuning open-source VLMs on Romanian visual question answering. We select VLMs from three widely used model families: LLaMA 3.2, LLaVA 1.6, and Qwen2. For fine-tuning, we employ the parameter-efficient LoRA method. Our models show improved Romanian capabilities in visual QA, as well as on tasks they were not trained on, such as Romanian image description generation. The seven-billion-parameter Qwen2-VL-RoVQA obtains top scores on both tasks, with improvements of +2.29% and +4.45% in BERTScore F1 on VQA and captioning, respectively, over its original version. Finally, the models show substantial reductions in grammatical errors compared to their original forms, indicating improvements not only in language understanding but also in Romanian fluency.
