Abstract

This article presents the first real-world autonomous flight of a 5G-connected aerial robot controlled by an edge-offloaded controller, and aims to bridge the gap between controlled and factual setups. The robot operates within an active industrial subterranean mine, while the high-level controller is deployed in a nearby Kubernetes-based edge cluster. Communication between the robot and the edge is enabled via a 5G New Radio (NR) Standalone (SA) network. The chosen controller is a Model Predictive Controller (MPC), which generates control actions to allow the robot to navigate seamlessly through the mining environment. A human operator selects waypoints for the aerial robot, and the MPC generates smooth, collision-free paths for autonomous executions. The proposed 5G edge-based closed-loop system is evaluated in a real industrial setting and demonstrates the potential of edge-controlled robotic systems toward time-critical, safe and efficient future deployments.

AccelMPC: High-Rate, Low-Power FPGA-Accelerated Model Predictive Control for Tiny Drones

Unlocking the potential of tiny aerial robots requires order of magnitude improvements in the performance of embedded edge control. In particular, although recent cached model predictive control (MPC) solvers can handle the fast system dynamics and complex constraints required for agile drone flight, their computational demands remain prohibitive for resource-constrained robots, forcing prior implementations to operate at reduced control rates. AccelMPC overcomes this challenge through an end-to-end co-design approach that jointly optimizes the solver algorithm, numerical representation, hardware mapping, and physical integration. AccelMPC pairs a co-designed FPGA-accelerated alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based MPC solver with a custom 6g PCB, providing high-bandwidth communication for deployment on a 35g Crazyflie. Hardware experiments demonstrate 1 kHz onboard constrained MPC with dynamic obstacles, up to 15.6x faster solve times and 195.4x improvement in energy-delay product over state-of-the-art embedded microcontroller-based solvers, all while scaling to optimization problems with over 20,000 optimization variables and a comparable number of constraints. We release our PCB design files, firmware, and FPGA solver code open source.

CSI-Assisted Edge SLAM Testbed Platform for 5G Connected Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles

The evolution from 5G towards 6G reinforces interest in connected robotics, where mobile robots offload compute-intensive tasks to edge servers over ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) links. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), a fundamental yet demanding robotics function, is increasingly considered for edge deployment within mobile edge computing (MEC) frameworks. In parallel, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) enables the use of radio channel information, such as channel state information (CSI), as an additional sensing modality in radio-based SLAM. In this paper, we design and implement a CSI-assisted Edge SLAM testbed integrating a custom unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), a ROS2-based SLAM framework, and a 5G Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) system. The proposed architecture provides an end-to-end, cross-layer view of ROS2 sensor data streaming over 5G, explicitly enabling CSI exposure and integration into the SLAM pipeline. We analyze ROS2 DDS communication, RTPS packetization, and 5G user-plane transport, and discuss mechanisms for CSI extraction and delivery via O-RAN components. The platform enables realistic experimentation with communication-aware SLAM and reveals key challenges related to latency, data streaming, synchronization, and cross-system integration, providing insights for future 6G-enabled robotic platforms.

A Semantic Communication Approach to Fiducial Marker Processing in 5G-Enabled Edge SLAM

Autonomous robots increasingly rely on edge computing to offload computationally intensive perception tasks while maintaining real-time operation over 5G networks. However, conventional fiducial marker detection pipelines provide limited opportunities for efficient task partitioning, making them poorly suited for communication-aware edge deployment. This paper proposes a semantic split inference framework for fiducial marker processing in 5G-enabled Edge SLAM. A DeepTag-inspired convolutional neural network is partitioned between the robot and the edge server, where intermediate feature representations serve as task-oriented semantic information transmitted over the wireless link. The framework is integrated into a ROS2-based robotic architecture and characterized over a real 5G communication testbed. Experimental results demonstrate accurate keypoint estimation, illustrate the impact on downstream pose estimation, and quantify the communication--computation trade-offs associated with different split points, providing practical insights for communication-aware deployment of deep visual perception in connected robotic systems.
