From Prediction to Self: Developmental Conditions for Agency in Minimal Neural Systems

Abstract

How does a system that merely predicts the world come to distinguish its own causal influence from everything else? We trace this transition in a minimal 192-dimensional GRU through 40 controlled experiments arranged as a developmental sequence, adding components one at a time and tracking whether the system can distinguish self-caused from world-caused changes. The developmental path reveals four conditions that must be satisfied in strict order: (1) persistent state forming stable attractors, (2) a causal action loop linking output to input, (3) proprioceptive feedback that makes implicit causal knowledge explicit, and (4) asynchronous awakening - perceptual learning must consolidate before action learning begins. We propose agency gain (A = Err_world - Err_self), the predictive advantage of knowing one's own action, as a metric to track this process. The self-aware predictor consistently outperforms the self-blind predictor across periodic (sinusoidal) and chaotic (Lorenz) environments, and the metric survives ablation of all auxiliary components. Only forward-sampled action selection produces meaningful agency gain; two gradient-based alternatives degenerate. Equally significant are 12 falsified hypotheses mapping where development stalls: predictive coding alone does not produce self-represent

From Detecting Agency to Doing Work: Self-Caused Credit Builds a Durable Behavioral Self in a Minimal Spiking Agent

How does an agent that can tell self from world come to be durably shaped by that distinction? Recent work shows that a predictive system can detect its own agency (Ye, 2026), but detecting agency does not explain durable, self-shaped behavior. We show that agency-gated slow credit -- a conjunctive term OwnAgencySalience driving a slow parameter update -- produces post-unload behavioral residue: on a spiking substrate (Nengo LIF/PES), a learned self-preserving choice survives episodic buffer removal (retained fraction 0.96, N=50) and collapses when the slow decoders are reset or the agency gate is removed. Reproducing the agency comparator and toggling only the slow-credit channel, we find a clean dissociation: at matched agency gain, durable behavior develops only when self-credit performs slow work (post-unload self-preservation 1.00 vs 0.00). The same dissociation holds in 24-dimensional partially-observed control (0.74 vs 0.00), and a plastic-work analysis shows that basin deformation equals net self-credit work. Across eight sequentially-learned tasks under exogenous interference, the multiplicative veto also prevents forgetting: it retains old tasks (final post-unload accuracy 0.88, forgetting 0.13) where additive pooling collapses to chance-level recall, the no-agency ablation falls below chance, and episodic/replay baselines stay near chance after unload -- all with no replay buffer and no task-boundary-dependent protection mechanism (N=50). We formalize the durable residue as an operational behavioral self and argue that self-caused credit doing slow work is a necessary building block for agents that develop a self. No claim of consciousness is made.

The Predictive-Causal Gap: An Impossibility Theorem and Large-Scale Neural Evidence

We report a systematic failure mode in predictive representation learning. Across 2695 neural network configurations trained to predict linear-Gaussian dynamics, the optimal encoder tracks the environment rather than the system it is meant to model. The mean causal fidelity -- the fraction of encoder sensitivity allocated to system degrees of freedom -- is 0.49, and only 2.5% of configurations exceed 0.70. The failure intensifies with dimension: at N=100, the optimal encoder becomes causally blind (fidelity ~10^{-8}) while achieving 92% lower prediction error than the causal representation. We prove this is not an optimization artifact but a structural property of the predictive objective: when environment modes are slower or less noisy than system modes, every minimizer of the population risk encodes the former. The set of dynamics exhibiting this predictive-causal gap is open and of positive measure in parameter space. In a nonlinear Duffing-GRU sweep, unconstrained predictors learn environment-dominant representations in 55% of tasks (95% CI 41--68%) versus 24% under operational grounding (p=2.3e-3); the median out-of-distribution MSE inflation under environment shift is 1.82x versus 1.00x. Operational grounding -- restricting the loss to system observables -- partially suppresses the gap, but causal fidelity is never recovered without an explicit system-environment boundary. The results identify the predictive-causal gap as a structural limit of learning, with implications for self-supervised representation learning, world models, and the scaling paradigm.

Perspective Latents as an Architectural Condition for Causal Emergence in Active Inference Agents

A recent line of work measures causal emergence in reinforcement learning agents through Integrated Information Decomposition, reporting that ΦrΦ_r grows with training and tracks reward improvement. For active inference, this raises the question of how reward-free predictive organization relates to such information-theoretic signatures. I test this within an active inference agent whose architecture separates a fast perception latent zz from a slow global latent gg, where gg is driven by prediction error and structurally decoupled from policy gradients. In a reward-free environmental regime-switching protocol, ΦrΦ_r concentrates in gg; its aggregate magnitude is largely architectural and decreases with training. The substantive effect of learning becomes legible only at the atom-compositional level: decoupling flips sign from negative to positive and becomes regime-invariant under environmental change, while downward causation carries the regime-dependent adjustment. These results identify gg as the architectural locus of ΦrΦ_r-relevant temporal organization in an active inference agent, and argue against reading scalar ΦrΦ_r as a direct index of learned integration.
