Zero-Parameter Geometric Gating for Temporally Stable Low-Altitude UAV Video Semantic Segmentation

Authors: Jingpu YangFengxian JiZhengzhao LaiJuanfan WuMingxuan CuiYufeng Wang

Abstract

Video semantic segmentation for low-altitude UAVs requires temporal consistency, yet dense optical flow introduces spatially structured noise in the planar regions that dominate aerial imagery. We propose a zero-parameter geometric gate that uses RANSAC homography inlier ratios on a 16×1616\times16 spatial grid to route each region to either homography or optical flow warp before fusion via Semantic Similarity Propagation. The gate requires no learned parameters -- only a median-threshold binary decision on RANSAC statistics -- adding only 211K trainable parameters (the SSP fusion layer) to a frozen backbone. On synthetic UAVid, the method achieves +4.24--4.91% mIoU improvement over base models across two architectures (SegFormer-b2 and Hiera-S+UPerNet). Mechanism diagnostics reveal that flow residuals in planar regions are spatially autocorrelated (Moran's I = 0.32, p<0.001p < 0.001), predict boundary instability (Spearman ρ=0.66ρ= 0.66), and that rigidification recovers temporal consistency from 62% to 92% (+29.5pp) in homography-valid regions.

UAV-OVVIS: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Also Need Open-Vocabulary Video Instance Segmentation

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) videos are widely used in traffic monitoring, urban management, and emergency rescue. However, existing UAV video perception mainly relies on box-level localization and trajectory association under predefined categories, making it difficult to simultaneously support flexible queries and fine-grained instance-level dynamic understanding in open scenarios. To this end, we introduce a new task, UAV Open-Vocabulary Video Instance Segmentation (UAV-OVVIS), which discovers targets in UAV videos according to open-vocabulary queries and outputs instance-level segmentation trajectories with globally consistent identities. Considering the scarcity of instance-level annotations in UAV scenarios, we propose AeroTrack, a training-free unified framework. AeroTrack centers on periodic open-vocabulary detection, short-segment mask propagation, and cross-segment identity unification, reusing existing visual foundation models to enable UAV-OVVIS. Based on this framework, we instantiate five AeroTrack variants and construct AeroVIS, an evaluation benchmark for UAV-OVVIS containing 9 UAV object categories and 8,279 trajectories. Experiments show that AeroTrack substantially outperforms existing general video instance segmentation methods in UAV scenarios and demonstrates strong open-vocabulary robustness and generalization. To support future research, we release AeroTrack and AeroVIS as a unified framework and benchmark for UAV-OVVIS.

GAAT: Geometry-Aware Alignment Transformer for Multimodal UAV Perception

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multimodal perception integrates visible (RGB), infrared (IR), synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and depth sensors for scene understanding under diverse conditions. However, differences in optics, resolution, and mounting often limit practical systems to global or image-center alignment. After tokenization, parallax, platform motion, and lens distortion can shift corresponding patch centers across modalities, weakening the spatial correspondence assumed by dense contrastive learning and cross-modal fusion. We propose GAAT (Geometry-Aware Alignment Transformer), an alignment-first pretrained model that estimates local correspondence reliability before cross-modal interaction. GAAT introduces syncPATC, which learns patch-center consistency under synchronized view transformations without correspondence annotations. It emits geometric priors, including token and query confidence, query centers, and sub-token offsets, that identify reliable local anchors across residual misalignment. Guided by these priors, MG-Sparse-MMA performs query-mediated sparse fusion over top-K_s reliable regions, replacing dense all-patch interaction with geometry-calibrated local updates. RA-QCGCL aligns pretraining supervision with this sparse query bottleneck through reliable patch-to-patch, patch-to-query, and query-to-query contrastive branches. We introduce UAVMeta and StateBench, which provide four acquisition-state scores derived from platform telemetry and image statistics: camera reliability, observation scale, viewpoint stability, and flight maneuver complexity. Extensive experiments across six downstream tasks demonstrate consistently superior transfer performance, establishing GAAT as a state-of-the-art multimodal foundation model for UAV perception. StateBench further enables a systematic diagnosis of real-world acquisition conditions.

DINO-GFSA: Geo-Localization via Semantic Gated Fusion and Mamba-based Sequential Aggregation

Cross-view geo-localization (CVGL) is critical for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) self-positioning and target localization in GNSS-denied environments. However, acquiring robust semantics while preserving finegrained spatial details remains challenging. To address this, we propose DINO-GFSA, a framework leveraging a LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation) adapted DINOv3 (ViTL) backbone for parameter-efficient, high-capacity representation. Crucially, we introduce a Semantic Gated Residual Fusion module, which utilizes high-level semantics to selectively calibrate and integrate low-level spatial cues, effectively bridging the semantic gap. Furthermore, a Mamba-based Sequential Aggregation Head is designed to capture long-range spatial dependencies with linear complexity. Experiments demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on University-1652 and DenseUAV benchmarks, notably surpassing the previous best on DenseUAV by 3.48% on Recall@1. These results validate DINO-GFSA as a generalized, robust solution for UAV CVGL.
