Designing AI-Supported Focus Groups: A Role x Modality Playbook

Abstract

Collecting participants' lived experiences is central to design research. Focus groups are uniquely valuable because participants not only share individual accounts but also respond to one another, surfacing comparison, disagreement, and collective sensemaking. However, focus groups are resource-intensive and highly sensitive to facilitation: moderators must probe for specificity, balance participation, manage topic flow, and sustain psychological safety, and subtle facilitation choices can shape what becomes salient. Recent HCI work and commercial meeting tools show that generative AI can scaffold live conversation through prompting, turn regulation, thematic mapping, and real-time summarization. Yet UXR teams lack a clear map of what these capabilities mean in focus groups and what methodological risks they introduce. We synthesize AI supports for live conversation and translate them into a focus-group-specific playbook organized by AI role (tool, co-host, host) and modality (text, voice, embodied).We synthesize prior work on AI-supported live conversation and propose a focus-group-specific playbook of AI supports organized by role (tool, co-host, host) and modality (text, voice, embodied). We characterize interactional trade-offs and identify open questions for evaluating AI-supported focus groups as methodological configurations.

Fake Plastic Voters: When Political Parties Can Use AI-Simulated Focus Groups

Political parties strive to understand their electorates, and focus groups are a vital tool in these efforts. AI-enhanced simulation technologies (AESTs) enable synthetic focus groups in a fraction of the time (and cost), raising the question of when and how such simulated evidence can be used in campaign research. This paper develops a decision matrix to help party strategists match research needs to appropriate simulation technologies and to identify when to escalate to hybrid or fully human focus groups. The matrix combines three dimensions: strategic purpose, deployment risk, and empirical grounding of the simulation tool. Strategic purpose is the decisive dimension, as it determines what kind of evidence the focus group is meant to produce: observing how political meanings and identities emerge through interaction (Mode 1) or testing and refining campaign messages (Mode 2). The matrix shows that, given documented failure modes such as sycophancy, persona drift, and the suppression of minority viewpoints, AESTs cannot replace human interaction in Mode 1 at any risk level. Within Mode 2, suitability depends instead on deployment risk and on the empirical grounding. Yet even here, we caution that routine reliance on AESTs may erode the qualitative craft on which sound judgment depends.

AI-Mediated Negotiation: Design Reflections and Lessons

Conversational AI promises a new kind of preparation for high-stakes workplace negotiations -- personalized, interactive, and capable of simulating realistic resistance. That promise is intuitive. We built Trucey, a theory-driven coaching system, to test it. The system encoded four assumptions: that articulation supports clarification, that personalization builds strategic competence, that chunked delivery reduces cognitive load, and that structured scaffolding removes metacognitive burden. A pre-registered experiment (N=267) and interviews (N=15) complicated each of them. Notably, the static handbook we included as a passive control outperformed both AI conditions on empowerment and usability. We reflect on why: each assumption encoded a specific model of how preparation unfolds, and the findings revealed that conversational AI imposes a linear execution model on a task that is fundamentally recursive. We identify an unexamined scope condition on established HAI design guidelines and close with a sequencing principle -- map before path, path before simulation -- for future AI coaching design.

Developing a Culturally Grounded, AI-Augmented UX Research Point of View (POV): An Exemplar Case Study from Telemedicine Dementia Care

User Experience Research (UXR) Points of View (POVs) distil complex and often fragmented research evidence into actionable perspectives that guide how teams interpret user needs, frame design decisions, and align stakeholders. Although POVs are widely used in industry practice, there are few published examples that explicitly document how POVs are constructed, particularly in culturally sensitive and low-resource contexts. This paper presents an exemplar case study demonstrating how a culturally grounded, AI-augmented UXR POV was developed to inform TeleDeCa, a telemedicine dementia care framework for family caregivers in Nigeria. Building on the UXR POV Playbook and pyramid framework, we illustrate how mixed-methods research, hypothesis generation, and ontology-based modelling can be combined to form a defensible POV without requiring a fully finalised system or validated outcomes. Generative AI (GenAI) is integrated across the UXR POV framework as a bounded research collaborator, supporting synthesis, hypothesis exploration, and narrative construction while preserving human judgment, ethical accountability, and cultural sensitivity. The contribution of this paper lies in the extraction of reusable Play Cards and a Play that extend the UXR POV Playbook and serve as exemplar material for the CHI 2026 workshop on developing AI-powered UXR POVs.
