Are you speaking my languages? On spoken language adherence in multimodal LLMs

Abstract

While Large Language Model (LLM) based Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) enables seamless multilingual use, models often misidentify the output language, compromising transcription fidelity and downstream application quality. To preserve flexibility and code-switching capabilities, we propose a soft prompting approach that hints at potential spoken languages without strictly constraining the output. We formally define this challenge as a lack of language adherence, introduce a novel metric to quantify violations, and evaluate three mitigation strategies: (1) zero-shot prompting for robust guidance under uncertainty, (2) supervised fine-tuning (SFT) to improve prompt adherence, and (3) Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning to enforce adherence during decoding. We present a comparative analysis of these methods across multiple languages, evaluating effectiveness in reducing the language violation while maintaining overall ASR performance. Finally, we discuss trade-offs to guide strategy selection under various compute constraints.

Enhancing Multilingual LLM-based ASR with Mixture of Experts and Dynamic Downsampling

The rapid progress of large language models (LLMs) has opened up a new frontier for automatic speech recognition (ASR), making their effective integration a critical and challenging research direction. To this end, this work proposes a projector-based LLM-ASR framework targeting the key challenges of multilingual generalization and modality alignment. Our approach incorporates a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture to improve cross-lingual adaptability, and a Continuous Integrate-and-Fire (CIF) mechanism for dynamic downsampling and modality alignment. Experimental results show that the combination of these components yields substantial performance improvements, surpassing strong baseline models. The proposed method represents a step toward building more accurate, robust, and generalizable LLM-based ASR systems.

Direct Preference Optimization for English-Mandarin Code-Switching Speech Recognition in Audio LLMs

Audio large language models (Audio LLMs) exhibit systematic failures in transcribing code-switching speech despite strong multilingual capabilities. Focusing on English-Mandarin, we identify three failure modes: language omission, translation-instead-of-transcription, and hallucination. We apply Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) to align models, constructing preference pairs in which chosen responses preserve mixed-language content while rejected responses mimic failure patterns. Training three Audio LLMs on 100K pairs (570 hours), we observe consistent behavioral shifts: models learn to preserve language composition rather than translating when prompted for transcription. This alignment yields MER reductions up to 89.6% (in-distribution) and 20.0% (out-of-distribution). Our findings suggest DPO can effectively elicit correct code-switching transcription behavior from multilingual Audio LLMs.

No One Fits All: From Fixed Prompting to Learned Routing in Multilingual LLMs

Translation-based prompting is widely used in multilingual LLMs, yet its effectiveness varies across languages and tasks. We evaluate prompting strategies across ten languages of different resource levels and four benchmarks. Our analysis shows that no single strategy is universally optimal. Translation strongly benefits low-resource languages even when translation quality is imperfect, high-resource languages gain little, and prompt-based self-routing underperforms explicit translation. Motivated by these findings, we formulate prompting strategy selection as a learned decision problem and introduce lightweight classifiers that predict whether native or translation-based prompting is optimal for each instance. The classifiers achieve statistically significant improvements over fixed strategies across four benchmarks and generalize to unseen task formats not observed during training. Further analysis reveals that language resource level, rather than translation quality alone, determines when translation is beneficial.
